“Breaking News: 85 People Own Half the World….”

The latest story of global inequality comes from Oxfam International this week: 85 people own as much of the world’s wealth has the 3.5 billion poorest people, or the bottom half of the planet. As for inequality in the US: 95% of the income gaps in recent years have gone to the top 1% of the population, with one out of every five American children now living in poverty. A particularly telling example of inequality in the US is the fact that the six heirs to the Walmart fortune now own as much as the bottom one-sixth of Americans, or nearly 50 million people

REMOTE

REMOTE (Reintegration, Education, Mentoring, Opportunity Through Entrepreneurship) is a social business focused on the entrepreneurial education of marginalized populations: incarcerated persons, those transitioning out of prison, and persons transitioning out of homelessness. The program consists of a six-month entrepreneurial education program, followed by a 2-3 month incubator program to get businesses off the ground, and finally a Microfinance institution to provide loans to the successful individuals of the program.

SEI February Lecture Series: B Corporations

SEI will host Jay Coen Gilbert, Co-Founder of B Lab for its February Lecture Series Event. B Lab is nonprofit that assesses and certifies businesses based on rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Today, 919 companies have taken steps to Certified B Corps from 28 countries and 60 industries working together toward 1 unifying goal: to redefine success in business. The event will take place on Thursday, February 20th, from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm at the Northeastern Alumni Center. Click here to register.

Social Enterprise Associates is a consulting firm and a registered B Corp since 2010 that provides business driven ‘triple bottom line’ results – generating financial, social, and environmental returns. The firm seeks interns to help social enterprises raise the capital they need, develop business plans, increase sustainability, and advance towards success. Internships are de-centralized and virtual (i.e. outside an office), can be project based/part-time. These real world practical learning opportunities help organizations improve. Lend for America is a program for students to create Campus MFIs that serve their local campus communities. The 2014 Lend for America Fellowship will provide students with the opportunity to work at one of three domestic, student-run MFIs in Providence Rhode Island, Newark, New Jersey, or Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
