Sherri Says....

Happy New Year!

The holidays provide us with a time to reflect on the past and the future. At BAG IT, we say an appreciative goodbye to 2012 and welcome 2013 with open arms. We have much to celebrate:

• Our 10th Anniversary year! You will hear more about planned celebrations in future newsletters. The Be There for BAG IT event in Phoenix on April 7 is definitely one to consider! Lots of fun - even if you have to travel to get there!

• We welcome new board members Darlene Brady and Carla Livak. What wonderful additions to our BAG IT family! Darlene’s accounting experience and Carla’s background in health care will equally contribute to BAG IT. Both bring extraordinary experience in working with organizations.

• One year anniversary with Beacon Group – read more below.

I send each of you a warm wish and thank you for all your assistance, support, and donations over the past year. We just can’t do this alone. If you received a BAG IT, we are hopeful you are on a continued path to improved health and wellness.

Since its inception 48 years ago, The Country Fair White Elephant in Green Valley has given more than $20 million back to the community; all from the sale of goods at the Green Valley thrift shop and online. The organization operates with the help of over 500 volunteers.

This ancient Chinese game never gets old! On November 3, BAG IT volunteer Joy Hughes organized the 7th Annual Green Valley Mah Jongg tournament to benefit BAG IT. An afternoon of fun for many brought serious bucks for BAG IT when the tournament winners also donated their prizes to our organization.

A big thank you to Joy Hughes and friends in Green Valley for donating close to over $9,500 over the last seven years! Your contributions help to ensure that BAG IT is available at no charge to patients.

BAG IT and Beacon Group celebrate their one year anniversary as partners serving the community. Beacon Group has been committed to providing employment-related opportunities to people with disabilities. The folks at Beacon do a great job of assembling our patient medical binders by hand and lovingly load them into each BAG IT bag with the resource publications. They are then packed into boxes and delivered or shipped all over Arizona.

Our thanks to all our buddies at Beacon, and especially to Greg Natvig, Muriel Rutherford, and Louis Benavidez for all their patience, assistance, and willingness to work with us.

2012-Take-a-Hike-logo final

The 9th Annual Take a Hike for BAG IT was a great success!

Presented by Arizona Oncology, over 300 people filled the Grand Ballroom at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort. Our friends at Summit Hut led the multi-level hikers while others enjoyed a meditation walk led by Mary Carhuff. Later everyone joined together to enjoy a tasty brunch.

Lively emcee and auctioneer David Fitzsimmons kept us in stitches while our guest speakers, Dr. Thomas Grogan, founder of Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. and Mrs. Cande Grogan, shared with us some poignant moments in their professional and personal cancer journeys.

Almost $85,000 was raised by our biggest fundraiser of the year….all of which will be used to provide BAG IT at no charge to newly diagnosed cancer patients in Arizona. Thanks once again to our Presenting Sponsor, Arizona Oncology, as well as all of our other generous sponsors, donors, 70+ volunteers and all of you who attended the event.

Tucson, we could not do this without you! See you on the trail next year…

Hi everyone, I am Rachel Dyckman, your 2012 Miss Arizona United States. I am a Tucson native, born in the beautiful Old Pueblo, and have chosen BAG IT as my platform during my reign as Queen. After watching many of my family members and close friends battle cancer, I realized that I wanted to devote my year to helping cancer patients in Arizona. During my reign, I have worked closely with BAG IT and have spread the word about the organization at all of my appearances – I was even able to talk about BAG IT at our nation’s capital as I competed for the title of Miss United States during the summer. I am so blessed to use my title to spotlight this great charity, and am excited to continue working with BAG IT for years to come.

Call for chemo caps!

With winter upon us, we are in need of knitters and sewing machine operators as we ramp up our supply of chemo caps to send out with the BAG IT bags. The pattern is easy and instruction is available if you are interested and just need help getting started. Let us know by email: info@bagit4u.org
