Reaping Hope celebrated the 22nd International Day of Older Persons with the senior citizens living in Nisahaya Sewa Sadan, an oldage home in Tinkune, Kathmandu. The International Day of Older Persons is observed in different parts of the world with different events and programs. The program, ” A Meal with the Elderly” was organized by Reaping Hope with the help of Mr. Prajol Dongol, an entrepreneur and a considerate citizen. On the 2nd of October, the team of RH visited 48 elderly living in the old age home and spent time with them while also provided them a proper lunch.

SINDHUPALCHOWK: Nyauli Tamang, an 82-year-old widow, was killed in her sleep at Timure, Thulopakhar VDC, in Sindhupalchok on Friday. Barabise Area Police Office suspected that a knife attack could have caused her death. The kin of Tamang’s husband found her in blood when they had gone to wake her up. Tamang received wounds on her stomach, chest and right womb, police said. She was living alone since her husband’s death a few years ago. The reason behind her death is yet to be established. According to police, her ornaments and purse, however, were still with her at the time of recovering the body. Further investigation into the case has already started. Police sources have assured the culprits would soon be brought to book.

Accuse staffers of pocketing allowances
RAJBIRAJ: Senior citizens of Barahibirpur VDC staged a sit-in in front of Saptari District Development Committee today accusing the VDC secretary and technical assistant of embezzling social security allowances meant for them. They alleged that VDC Secretary Jagadhar Thakur and technical assistant Sitaram Ray pocketed their allowances by forging their signatures. Gulkuniya Devi Ram of Barahibirpur said that Thakur and Ray forged signatures and withdrew their allowances for four months.

NUWAKOT: An octogenarian was beaten to death here at Deurali in the district on Sunday. Sixteen-year old Nepal Tamang murdered former British Gurkha soldier Bahadur Singh Tamang, 88, at his residence in Deurali-9, police said. During police interrogation, Nepal admitted his crime and said he killed Bahadur in vengeance for the latter allegedly made him sick in his childhood by using black magic.

BIRATNAGAR: Jibkumari Ojha of Biratnagar-6, who suffers from high blood pressure, used to manage her medical expenses from the social security allowance she received from the government. But with delay in the distribution of the allowance, she has been relying on her family for medication, placing an extra financial burden on them. She has not received her social security allowance for the past eight months.

“I was managing somehow to buy the medicine with that amount. But now I have to rely on my family,” said Ojha. “Months have elapsed waiting for the allowance and now I feel it will never come.” Like Ojha, there are 5,679 people in Biratnagar Sub-metropolitan city waiting for their social security allowance since January.

MYANGLUNG: Torna Prasad Neupane on Thursday night allegedly thrashed his father Kurumb Neupane (72) to death at Panchakanya VDC, Terhathum. Police said Kurumb’s body was found buried in a field near the house on Friday. A hunt for the absconding murderer is on, police informed.

DHANKUTA: An elderly woman was hacked to death in Dhankuta Bus Park over a trade dispute, police said today. The deceased has been identified as Gangaram BK (69) of Tarahara-2, Sunsari, was killed by an Indian national Pramod Prasad Shah (30) today. BK has been in the business of home made tools (muda) in Dahnkuta, while Shah is street vendor.

RAUTAHAT: Police recovered a dead body of elderly in Rautahat on Monday. The body of Mr. Karna Paudel (65) of Nejgadh, Bara, was found on the Bagmati river bank at Chandranigahapur-5. The deceased, a pensioner of the Nepali Army and also the priest of the Mahadev temple was suffering from asthma, APO Chandranigahapur said.

Tej Kumari Koirala – 78, is a widow currently staying at an Old Age Home (OAH) named Nisahaya Sewa Sadan. She used to live in an OAH of Janakpur before she was brought to Kathmandu in 2010 by her kinfolks. She was born and raised in Pareli Dada – Dudhouli in Sindhuli District.

She has been living as a widow for the past 68 years. She was a victim of early childhood marriage back in her village. She remembers, back then in her place, child marriage was a normal thing. She got married at the age of 6 and at the age of 10, she lost her husband due to illness. After since, she accepted her fate to live as a widow for the rest of her life. She lived in her Maita (Maternal Home) for 52 years and at the age of 62, she was taken to the OAH in Janakpur. “The Madhesi (From Terai) people used to hate me just because I was the only Pahadi (from Hilly region) in that place”, she said. She was being neglected by the caretakers of Janakpur just because of that. She lived without proper care for 14 years and after that, she was brought to Kathmandu where she has been staying for the past 2 years. When asked how she spends her day in here, she answers, “My mornings pass by doing Puja (worshiping god) and most of the days I make Batti (used for lighting during Puja) during daytime. We also have Bhajan (Prayers) everyday in the evening. “

DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS

NEPAL adopted the Yogyakarta Declaration on Ageing and Health, pledging to improve the national response to the health of ageing and aged populations. Health Minister Rajendra Mahato and Secretary Dr Prabin Mishra, representing Nepal, agreed to the declaration, along with 10 other World Health Organization (WHO) member states from South-East Asia, in a regional meeting being organized from September 4-7 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

KATHMANDU: Patan Hospital in coordination with the Health and Population Ministry’s population division is operating a separate geriatric ward after Dashain festival. Dr Arjun Karki, vice-chancellor of the Patan Academy of Health Sciences, said the hospital is busy installing equipment for the ward. The ward will have elderly-friendly toilet, passageway, floor and other infrastructure, according to Dr Karki.

The ministry is also working to establish geriatric centers at the Kirtipur-based National Ayurvedic Training and Research Centre and Bharatpur Hospital at a time when the country is witnessing an increase in life expectancy due to advances in the medical field, according to vice-chancellor Karki. Nonetheless, the elders are suffering from various diseases and health institutions lack proper facilities to cater to them. He informed that they have sent some doctors and nurses abroad for special training on geriatrics, noting that the country does not even have a single geriatric specialist.

KATHMANDU: IN a landmark decision, legally married spouses of ex-Indian Army servicemen, whose names are listed in service records, are now eligible for ordinary family pension after the death of the soldiers and until their own death, said the Indian Embassy in a statement. Similarly, if an ex-serviceman is legally married to more than one woman, the family pension will be equally divided among the widows after the death of the pensioner. “Widows have to report personally to collect their share of the pension.
