News, Reviews & Resources   ||   Issue 106 December 2013

2014

Dear Reader,

With this issue of Starlink we're looking back on another busy, challenging but fulfiling year. And we're sure most of our readers will be doing the same.

It's amazing how a few stones rolling at the start of a year can become what seems like an avalanche by the end. :)

We've delivered several Appreciative Inquiry workshops both locally and interstate, launched our new Chair Chi Training Program for the aged care sector, spent time (in person or virtually) with generous-spirited colleagues and worked on varied projects with wonderful clients. All the day to day tasks - those involved in running any business - also seemed to increase as the year progressed so our 'to do' and 'on the back burner for now' lists grew ever longer. :)

But we managed to avoid being buried completely. And it's a great feeling at the end of each year to look back on various achievements or successes - and to reflect on those 'magic moments' that are always a part of this work that we do.

This time of year sees many celebrations in different cultures and parts of the world. Our December issue of Starlink has slipped past Hanukkah (which ended on 5 December) and Bhodi Day (8 December), though it will reach our readers on the brink of Christmas ... and Yule or Saturnalia. :)

On 25 December here in Australia some are brave enough to tackle hot roast turkey and Christmas puddings in soaring temperatures. Others opt for summer salads and a festive Christmas ham, saving the winter fare for a Christmas in July celebration. But whatever the particular customs everyone has, it's definitely a season of sunshine, barbecues and get togethers with family and friends.

Starlink also takes a summer break during January, so the first issue for next year will arrive in your inbox in February.

In the meantime, whatever your particular tradition, beliefs and customs, may we wish you all the very best for a satisfyingly reflective, festive end to 2013 and a wonderful start to the new year!

Cheers
Sue & Chris

Creating Effective Partnerships

partnerships

Effective partnerships (between community organisations, with various stakeholders of all ages, between clients and service providers, and more) are an ever more pressing need if we are to provide effective services and create the kinds of communities - and indeed the kind of world - that we would like to see. Here are four resources with information and tips on how to go about developing successful partnerships.

Collaborating with Business for Social Transformation
Though written back in 2008, this guide is still very useful for community organisations wishing to develop partnerships with businesses

Building Effective Partnerships
This guide identifies some of the key elements needed to develop an effective partnership. It provides a suggested framework for the organization and identifies the ingredients common to successful partnerships.

The Australian Third Sector Magazine offers an e-guide at a reasonable cost: Creating Effective Partnerships for Your NFP.

The FindYouth website, though US based, is also helpful in an Australian context. Start with their Community Assessment page, then take links from that page to information about Identifying and Building Effectve Partnerships, Sustaining Effective Partnerships and Managing Effective Partnerships, as well as tips for engaging young people in those partnerships.

Melbourne CAREX 2014

carex

The Melbourne CAREX will take place at the Caufield Racecourse on April 2 & 3 2014.

For anyone working in the health, aged care or disability sectors and planning professional development activities for next year, this expo is a worthwhile consideration.

There is no charge for admission to the Expo. There are four half day workshops that attract a registration fee, but there is a 'two for one' offer for the first twenty people to register for a workshop. And for appropriate health professionals, attendance can qualify for CPD hours.

CAREX represents a unique annual opportunity for information, education, networking, review & investing. With its mix of product & service based exhibitors, free & fee-paying workshops/seminars and other activities, CAREX is an event not to be missed.

Australia's Youth Matters Survey

Australia Youth Matters

For anyone working with young people, this report is worth downloading and reading: Australia's Youth Matters: Young people talk about what matters to them.

AYAC believes that young people are experts in their own lives and their own experiences. In August 2013, AYAC partnered with The Australia Institute to conduct a quantitative survey of young Australians aged 17-24 years to discover what issues they cared about and wanted the government to take action on over the next three years.

AYAC conducted a complimentary (sic) survey of young people to gather qualitative feedback on what lies beneath – what they’ve heard about the issue, their experiences and why they think that the government should be doing more to address these concerns. The report presents the top issues identified by our survey, and direct commentary from young Australians on why these issues are important to them.

JustGiving

giving

Launchedn in 2001, JustGiving is a global online platform for charity giving.

Since our launch in 2001, we’ve enabled over 21 million people to raise 1.5 billion pounds for over 13,000 charities and causes in radically new ways. Our job is to make giving and raising money for charity simple, social and rewarding. Through online and mobile we bring the best that technology has to offer to charities worldwide - which explains why more charities recommend JustGiving than any other online fundraising platform. We run our business by charging charities a small fee on donations.

We re-invest any surplus cash into developing our innovative world-class technology to make giving to charity easier and quicker. From text donations to company fundraising, we create more ways for more people to give.

The website offers this service to charities around the world. In Australia, any registered charity with Deductible Gift Recipient status can join. See this page for features and pricing relevant to Australia.

Take a Moment ... and Paws

puppies

If you or anyone you know is considering the gift of a puppy this festive season, you may like to read about the RSPCA's Christmas campaign and some 'facts on buying a puppy this Christmas'.

The information includes tips on how to select a puppy that is NOT produced by a 'puppy farm' or backyard breeder.

It also reminds us to be careful of those impulse buys because owning a pet is a long term commitment. Sadly every year after Christmas the RSPCA is "overwhelmed with surrendered dogs and kittens as a result of impulse buying".

Included in the information are downloads for their Smart Puppy and Dog Buyers Guide or Smart Puppy Buyer's Checklist.

If you'd like to know more about puppy farming, the RSPCA also has a dedicted Close Puppy Factories website. There are also two other sites to mention, where concerned people are running campaigns to end puppy factories: Oscar's Law (Oscar was one of a number of dogs who were rescued from a puppy factory in central Victoria, where they had been neglected to the point they required urgent veterinary care) and Puppy Prisoners.

We should warn you that many of the images and videos on these sites are alarming and distressing! But we decided to share the links in this issue of Starlink in the hope that the information they provide may encourage others to offer their support and help to end this appalling practice.

But this year we will add three more websites with a wealth of ideas and activities for the whole family - also including online games, recipes, fonts, stories, screensavers, trivia and clipart:
