Crescent Hill Nursery September E-Newsletter 2012

IMG 8090

Contrary to urban legend, Purple Tiger Passionflower is actually not a sea anemone that has detached and gone terrestrial.

The CHN e-newsletter is our show of gratitude to the loyal market customers at our many events around the Central Coast. It will serve as a site for seasonal updates, "plant of the month" specials, the "ask a nurseryman" section, links to our partners, and a whole lot more. New for 2012 will be a category which features highlights from our tours of clients gardens in 2011, as well as a "project" page which summarizes some of our recent landscape installations. The e-newsletter is a way to stay connected with our thriving and knowledgeable garden community. Please send us your comments on how to make this e-newsletter more useful to all, and don't forget to pass along the link to a friend!

Happy Planting,
Nathan Krupa (owner/grower)

PLANT OF THE MONTH

Close up of the shimmering Garnet/Red Coreopsis!!!

Coreopsis 'Garnet'

Amazing new breeding has expanded the breath of the common garden sunflower Coreopsis, or Tickweed. Always known for their hardiness and ability to perennially produce huge displays of summer flowers, new varieties also boast different color choices and an expanded bloom cycle. Sunset Magazine recently hailed these improvements, and labeled Coreopsis as "the West's go-to summer flower". Crescent Hill Nursery's September Plant of the Month, the Coreopsis 'Garnet', is the new selection we are most excited about! From the 'Jewel' series by Terra Nova Nurseries 'Garnet' is an amazingly handsome and hardy plant, which thrives under the tutelage of both novice and seasoned gardeners. While we have become accustomed to yellow flowered Coreopsis, the big breakthrough with this variety is the color of the blooms. The magenta-tipped petals fade to garnet/red around the deeper purple, yellow speckled center. Yes, a pink and red Coreopsis has arrived!! Grown in full sun, these butterfly attractors are also known for having an extended bloom cycle which spans from late spring through fall. A quick cutback after the first flowers fade is all that is necessary to keep this repeat bloomer going through the late gardening season. 'Garnet' grows in USDA Hardiness zones 7-10 (to 0 degrees F), making it a hardy, as well as low maintenance, plant that also becomes drought resistant once established. It's compact structure (12-18"tall X 20"wide) permits placement in a multitude of garden situations, especially flourishing in rock gardens, cottage gardens, and along borders and pathways. Its long lasting burst of vibrant color also makes it a great candidate for potted culture or mixed arrangements. The versatile, unique, and long blooming Coreopsis 'Garnet' is now in full flower at Crescent Hill and ready for placement in any California Garden.

Special E-Newsletter Price; $5 per 1-gallon container!! Compare at other nurseries for $10 and above. Mention this review to receive discount.
