PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE

In accordance with RI State Law, the RI Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) to hold public hearings on proposed minor weekend service reductions affecting routes 32, 73 and 80. The announced proposed changes in service are a result of low ridership. The public hearing will be held at the East Providence Senior Center, 610 Waterman Avenue, East Providence on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 from 12PM-2PM and again from 6PM-8PM.

SNEAK PEAK AT 2014 SUMMER SERVICE CHANGES

RIPTA makes regular service adjustments three times a year in response to seasonal changes and/or passenger use. These summer service changes are part of the third phase of RIPTA’s implementation of its Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA) which assessed the demand for transit service throughout the state.

1 – New Super Route! This route has been combined with Routes 42 and 77.
Service has been redesigned to operate between South Attleboro Train Station and T.F. Green Airport.
13 – New Sunday & Holiday service added.
17 – New Sunday & Holiday service added.
21 – Sunday service has been extended to RI Mall.
35 – Service has been realigned to operate to South Attleboro Train Station.
58 – This route will now operate via Rte 146.
60 – More frequency; now offering 15 minute peak and 30 minute off-peak service.
61X – New Route! New express, limited stop service has been added between Fish Rd. Park-n-Ride in Tiverton and downtown Providence, Kennedy Plaza.
98 – New Route! Service on Pawtucket Avenue will operate between downtown Pawtucket and Job Lot.

RIDERSHIP ON THE RISE

RIPTA ridership is on the rise according to a recently released report by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). APTA reported that Americans took 10.7 billion trips on public transportation in 2013, which is the highest annual public transit ridership number in 57 years. According to the report, RIPTA is ranked 7th out of 37 large bus agencies for ridership growth. In 2013, RIPTA recorded a total of 19.7 million boardings, an increase of 1.25% percent from the 19.5 million boardings recorded in 2012. Click here for details.

RIPTA RECEIVES $1.6 MILLION SANDY RESILIENCY GRANT TO STRENGTHEN NEWPORT GATEWAY CENTER

RIPTA received $1,602,000 in Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funding to improve passenger protection and reduce flooding at the Newport Gateway Center, one of RIPTA’s major transit hubs. The facility’s tent-like sails, which were designed to protect riders from sun and rain, were severely damaged by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012. Click here for details.
