Spring 2014 Senior Dinner & Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

hallOfFame

On Friday, April 11th, we packed the chapter house at 2722 Bancroft to honor seventeen graduating seniors, one of the largest ever graduating Cal Beta classes. Their names, degrees and current career plans were published in the March 2014 Online Newsletter. In addition, Rich Lyons ’78 and John Williams ’71 were inducted into the SAE Cal Beta Andy Smith Hall of Fame. Click here to read their biographies. Since the Hall of Fame was launched in the fall of 2010, a total of thirty six Cal Beta alumni have been inducted. The next Hall of Fame ceremony will be held at Duck Dinner on November 21, 2014. Please email us at info@SAECalBeta.org with the names of other alumni who should be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame.

40+ Year Group Reunion of 1971-1974 Era Brothers

On Saturday, April 12th, we packed the chapter house again starting at 4:30 PM, this time for a group reunion of the brothers (and their spouses) who lived in the house between fall 1971 and spring 1974. Chef Matt Streeter did an amazing job on the bbq steak dinner and appropriate libations were in ample supply throughout the afternoon and evening. The storytelling, led by Al Johnson (EA spring ’72) and John Williams (EA fall ’74), was worth the price of admission. Special recognition was given to Dan Thompson ’71 who has been battling pancreatic cancer since the fall of 2012. Dan introduced his PB John Williams the previous evening at the Hall of Fame ceremony. If any of you is interested in reading Dan’s blog, appropriately titled F*CK CANCER, just send us an email and we’ll make sure you get added to the distribution list.

Summer 2014 Newsletter

We have engaged Wilsted & Taylor, the same firm who designed and edited the SAE History Book, to work with us on the upcoming Summer 2014 newsletter which we hope to have in your hands by mid-August. As currently envisioned, this is shaping up to be one of the most interesting and most complete newsletters Cal Beta has ever published. But in order to accomplish this goal, we need your help. We would like to dedicate several pages to News from the Alumni. So . . . if you have any news that you want to share or have any suggestions for stories you would like to see included in the newsletter, please email us at info@SAECalBeta.org. We thank you in advance for your input.

Dick Ament ’51 Donates Varsity Baseball MVP Trophy for 1954 Season

DickAment

The Cal Beta trophy case has another cherished addition. Brother Dick Ament has donated his MVP trophy for the 1954 Varsity baseball season. A luncheon was held in Dick’s honor at the Faculty Club back in March. Pictured from left to right are: Claude Rohwer ‘51, Ed Lippstreu ‘49, Dick Ament and Bob Leslie ’51. Claude reminded Dick at the luncheon that his first hit as a Cal Bear was a home run even though Dick did not consider himself a power hitter. He was worried after that first game that the coach and team were going to expect a lot more home runs from him.
