Reaching far across the ocean to our friends in Japan, it is time to feature new work by Yoichi Nagata and Celine Wu. Although they reside under one roof with their daughter Sera, their works are completely different. Yoichi works in color and Celine in black and white.
Yoichi has been working on a series of portraits for almost a decade and has shot well over 600 portraits from the series, Star of the Stars, who the artist says are just "regular" people (dare I say, normal) that gather during the late night hours in the Tokyo clubs exhibiting their daring and outlandish dress, costumes and makeup, which is a far cry from how they dress during the day at their 'day jobs'. These "clubgoers" as they are known to be, happily pose for their portrait and offer high compliments to their fellow clubgoers regarding their dress and makeup.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Celine's work from the series, Presence In Between, exposes subtle shadows that are printed on Japanese “washi” paper which is hand made by the 9th generation Living National Treasure, Master Ichibei Iwano, to enhance the naturalness and beauty of the images.
In addition to the work being presented in the traditional manner on paper, she also presents her work printed on scrolls.

Without a doubt, Japan's most well known and master photographer is Eikoh Hosoe, whom I met when I visited his studio in 1979 in preparation for Mr. Hosoe's 20 year retrospective, Eikoh Hosoe: Photographs 1960-1980, at the Susan Spiritus Gallery. During that visit I purchased a collection of 100 photographs which included works from Ordeal By Roses, Embrace, Kamatachi, Man & Woman, Gaudi Ceilings, Simon, A Private Landscape, and selections from Workshops. A small selection remain available for sale and are presented here and on the Susan Spiritus Gallery website.
