The Farm Report

EcoStation's two farms, Bushwick Campus Farm and Farm-in-the-Sky, were both abuzz this summer, and not just with bees!

Both were tended to by a diverse and dedicated crew - our adult Apprentices. They were indispensable.

But they weren't alone: we also had eleven paid student workers! The highly sought-after summer jobs were made possible by Green Guerillas' Youth Tillers program, and Buswhick Campus' own Food Fighters program. The students also worked with us at at public events, in local community gardens, and at Bushwick Farmers' Market. Their training began with a special Food & Social Justice Workshop, which put the work and season ahead of them into context. The response to this pilot program was overwhelmingly positive.

On Thursday October 4th, the easiest fundraiser ever returns! Mark your calendars, gather a group of friends, and have a fun night out – for a great cause!

Support environmental education and local sustainable agriculture simply by dining at a participating eatery on Thursday, October 4, who will be generously donating a portion of the day's take to Bushwick Campus Farm, where EcoStation:NY is cultivating the next generation of "green" leaders.

The full list of participating venues will be posted on our website on Friday, September 14. If you are a restaurateur and would like to participate, contact Farmer Maggie immediately!

The Market Report

Bushwick Farmers' Market, open in five locations this year, continues to grow, making new fans and connecting the community with regional family-owned farms and the healthy food they grow. New and interesting local entrepreneurs, including Kaye Tea and Mollye's Muffins, have enlivened our vendor lineup.

Stop by our flagship Saturday market at Maria Hernandez Park (map) and enter to win one of our USA-made, eco-friendly tote bags or aprons (modeled at right by assistant market manager, Erik) - no purchase necessary. Ask a market manager for details. We'll be giving away one each week through October!

Market volunteers are always welcome - contact Nick, our outreach manager, to see how you can get involved at the market or at upcoming events.

Staff Changes @ EcoStation

Last but certainly not least, EcoStation would like to welcome aboard Andrew Noble as our new Treasurer and board member, replacing Kendall Morrison, one of our co-founders, who is now pursuing projects in Perú. A Bushwick resident and former farmboy, Andrew is a senior staff member at EisnerAmper, one of the nation's top accounting firms. His financial finesse is a welcome addition to our team's skill set. Welcome, Andrew!

Maggie Cheney, our amazing Director of Farms and Education, has also now joined our executive committee, serving as board secretary. EcoStation:NY co-founder and Director of Markets (and all-around great guy) Travis Tench will now be serving as our vice president.
