Hello !!

Hope you are feeling a bit better supported than this individual. Good thing a friend is nearby!

I'm celebrating this mid-point in fall with both a learning opportunity and time for re-connection with professional and personal friends. Tomorrow, I'll be attending the "Walk for Life-2" Training in Oakland, CA taught by one of my "aging well" mentors, Ruthy Alon. I'm sure I'll get a few new ideas to better connect our skeletons for easier movement. I look forward to sharing them with you!

Live Long and Prosper: A Clue!

telomeres

Last month, I wrote about Blue Zones, those places where people live healthy and long lives. Well, new research may help explain why.

A small pilot study involving men with low-risk prostate-cancer reported by Dr. Dean Ornish’s Preventative Medicine Research Institute and the University of California, San Francisco indicates that a healthy lifestyle (diet, exercise, stress management and social support) results in an increase in telomere length after 5 years. See more

Why all the excitement? Telomeres, the little caps on the ends of our chromosomes, generally get shorter over time and telomere length influences how long we live. Maybe it is possible to modify, even reverse aging, on a cellular level. This is a first.

Mini-Lesson: Give Yourself a Hug

A skeletal connection that can give us problems is the area of the neck and shoulders. We'll focus on that area in the next series of classes. In the meantime, here's a short exploration to get you started. Thanks to my colleague Vita Kolodny, Director of the Feldenkrais Centre in Vancouver, BC for this mini-lesson.

Sit comfortably forward on a chair with your feet on the floor approximately hip width apart.
• Hug yourself by reaching your right arm across your chest and under your left armpit to hold onto your left shoulder blade.
• Cross your left arm over your right and hold your left shoulder. Your elbows are crossed on top of each other in front of you.
• With your right hand gently bring your left shoulder toward the right and return. Repeat a few times.
• As you repeat these movements notice that your right shoulder moves back and your left shoulder comes forward and both your elbows move to the right.
• Notice where your eyes and head move. Can you sense your rib cage moving?
• Continue these movements and breathe easily and unclench your jaw.
• Change arms so that your left arm reaches under your right to hold your right shoulder blade and your right arm is over your chest holding your left shoulder.
• Let your left hand, holding onto your right shoulder blade bring your right shoulder over to the left a few times.
• Pay attention to how different this movement feels. We typically do movements differently on each side. Continue to breathe easily, let your neck be soft and loose and attend to how your pelvis and whole trunk participate.
• After a short pause, gently pull with one hand and then the other to move side to side. After a few movements, change hands again and repeat moving side to side
