I hope you have all had a flying start to 2013. It's hard to believe we're in February already! I've got lots to tell you about: ebooks in new territories, events coming up, more Book Loves and plans for new novels. Enjoy the update, and I hope you have all found some great books to read this year!

Amazon e-books

beneath the shadows v003

It's taken a while to get up and running, but Shallow Breath is now available for those outside Australia on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk as a Kindle ebook (with a brand-new cover - pictured). Don't worry if you don't have a Kindle: you can get a Kindle app and still read the book on your iPad or PC.

Come Back to Me will also be available in this format within the next few weeks, and as soon as it's up I'll add links on to my website, facebook and twitter pages. Watch out for special offers too!

Events in Perth

The coming week will be a busy one for me, as I have three events coming up in Perth. All of them are free, and I'd love to see you there.
I'll be at South Perth library at 6.30 pm on Tues 19th Feb as part of their Words with Wine series (for bookings call (08) 9474 0800).
At the Perth Writers Festival I'll be taking part in the Stella Prize Trivia Night on Fri 22nd Feb from 6.30-8.00 pm in the beautiful Sunken Garden at UWA. The next day, Sat 23rd Feb, 5.15-6.00 pm, I'll be discussing Shallow Breath with Julienne van Loon in the Juliet Tent at UWA, as part of Writing WA's 'A Glass of Wine and a Good Book' series. And I'll also be at the Room to Read tent at the Perth Writers Festival family day (24 Feb) if you'd like to come and say hi!
Pairing writing with wine is obviously the way to go, because if you can't make any of these I'll be at Beaufort St Books in Mount Lawley from 6.30 pm on 12th March, where there will also be wine-tasting to supplement the book discussion! Tickets for this one are $7.50, and bookings can be made by calling (08) 6142 7996.

If you enjoyed Beneath the Shadows you can now find all the 'extras' to the book at www.beneaththeshadows.com.

The site features a bonus chapter, Annabel's finished article, a short film where I talk about creating the novel, and even a painting of the inside of Grace's cottage!

I hope you enjoy these additions to the story.

Latest Book Loves

Word of mouth is essential for a book to succeed - which is why I enjoy telling you about the books I love. Here are my latest reviews:
The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton
Wool by Hugh Howey
A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, from an idea by Siobhan Dowd
The Secret River by Kate Grenville
Searching for the Secret River by Kate Grenville
I've also signed up for the Australian Women Writers challenge this year, and I'm spoiled for choice for future reading. High on my list: Mary-Rose MacColl's In Falling Snow, Chloe Hooper's The Engagement, Anna Funder's All That I Am, Nicola Moriarty's Paper Chains, and the upcoming and highly anticipated Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. The AWW challenge is open to all - click on the link to join in.

On the Shallow Breath publicity trail

There have been a number of highlights over the publicity period for Shallow Breath. One of my favourites was finding it featured as Pick of the Week in both the Sydney Morning Herald and The Saturday Age, just before New Year. I was also thrilled to see a lovely review in the Australian Women's Weekly, as well as in Scoop magazine and The West Australian. In the blogosphere it has been garnering much-appreciated support from book blogs including Write Note Reviews, An Adventure in Reading, Book'd Out, 1Girl2ManyBooks, Book Muster Down Under and more. You can find more details of these reviews on my website.
I've also been answering questions and conducting interviews. I even took my daughter to one radio interview with 89.7FM (ECU), which went well until she decided she had to show me her Dora colouring while I was on air! As you can see from the picture (if it isn't too small!), we both enjoyed ourselves very much.

Conservation notes

Once you've read Shallow Breath you'll know I'm particularly passionate about conservation. If you share my interest, then there are worldwide demonstrations against the dolphin hunting in Taiji coming up very soon on 22 Feb (includes Perth). Find a full list of participants here. And there's also a concert for the Kimberley happening in Fremantle on 24 February (1.30-6.30 pm), with stars such as John Butler and Missy Higgins coming out in support. Details are here.
I'm constantly alarmed by what I'm reading at the moment. For instance, a report last week suggests that 1 in 5 reptiles, some of the longest surviving species on the planet, are under threat of extinction. Let's hope we can all get the word out about these critical issues before it's too late. For more on my own research in these areas, visit www.shallowbreath.com.

And finally...

...I haven't forgotten that my number one passion is writing! I'm busy making notes on a new novel, currently called Nightfall, and I'll be heading to the Lake District in March to do some research for this one. It's going to be full steam ahead over the next few months, so wish me luck, and I hope to have more to tell you on that front soon. Until next time, wishing you all a great couple of months and a very happy Easter.
