Jacaranda House

Jazz at Jacaranda:
First Sundays

Sunday, March 2nd
6pm-8pm
Jacaranda House, Corner of Parliament and East Hill Streets

Jazz at Jacaranda: First Sundays kicks off its 2014 series with a bang! On Sunday, March 2, 2014, scores of Jazz lovers will descend upon Jacaranda House to see what's in store for the new year. The show line up is sure to entertain and promises to be something old, something new, nothing borrowed and even a little Blues!

This monthly Jazz show has become a local favorite for Jazz enthusiasts. The rich history of the music fits so well with the historic colonial charm of the Jacaranda property, which is nestled in the heart of downtown, Nassau.

"Jazz at Jacaranda: First Sundays" is the brainchild of husband and wife duo, Clinton Crawford and Naomi Taylor-Crawford. As musicians, this couple felt a void for good, wholesome entertainment that inspired both the musicians and the audience. There was also limited opportunities for experienced and upcoming musicians to collaborate and motivate each other by playing together.

"We wanted to not only raise the bar for musicians but get musicians working together and supporting each other while encouraging and mentoring aspiring young musicians," says Mrs. Taylor-Crawford, "

Jacaranda-trumpeter

"There are very few safe, affordable venues for live music locally, and on the rare occasions where it is found, the music is often disturbingly loud and mundane", she added. "This is one of the reasons why the Jazz at Jacaranda shows were a huge hit since its inception in 2012."

The core band comprises of a cross-collaboration of members from the Vice Versa Band together with other highly skilled local musicians. The monthly Sunday poolside concerts feature various vocalists and respected musicians such as Peanuts Taylor as well as younger musicians with outstanding, rare talent playing your favorite popular Jazz standards.

To kick off the 2014 series, returning vocalists such as songbird Anja Bowe, her brother Philip Bowe, the very young but talented Taylor Brothers and Mrs. Taylor-Crawford herself, as well as new voices, including the smooth, sultry voice of Linda Osborn, Contralto, will add spice to the evening.

Linda is no stranger to the stage. At the age of three, she began singing harmony with her mother to entertain family friends. Raised in a musical family, Linda’s main focus has been in vocal performance in church and community choirs, small groups, duets, trios and some solo singing. Linda has been a member of The Renaissance Singers, Bel

Canto, Sine Nomine and presently The Highgrove Singers. She is blessed with a rich contralto voice and is comfortable singing a variety of genres. On March 2nd, she will make her local debut as a Jazz stylist with her lush but soothing interpretation of the 1939 popular Jazz ballad "What's New?".

The show runs promptly from 6pm to 8pm at Jacaranda House, corner of Parliament and E. Hill Streets. Cover charge is $10. A cash wine bar and light hors d'oeuvre options will be available.

Make the most of Old Nassau to rebuild the 'family business' of tourism

by Larry Smith

Google 'downtown redevelopment’ and you will find zillions of web pages focusing on one city after another - from Miami to Manhattan to Toronto and almost every place in between. Even Las Vegas has a downtown revitalisation programme, although the city was originally just a cattle ranch and wasn't incorporated until the 1900s.

This phenomenon came about due to major changes in urban environments over the past 60-odd years - office and retail activity today is much more dispersed than in earlier times. But despite their precipitous decline, town centres still form an important part of a community’s identity, for one reason or another. Revitalisation programmes are an effort to rebalance the urban economy and stem the loss of historic districts.

We can clearly see the problem right here on New Providence. The city of Nassau (not just the statutory limits) stretches from Bay Street to Wulff Road and from the Eastern Parade to Nassau Street, just beyond the long-vanished Western Parade. It's decline as a thriving city centre has been attributed to the removal of the public market from downtown, the construction of outlying shopping malls, and a population shift to residential suburbs [...]

Nassau's Over-the-Hill documentary premiers

Bahamian filmmaker and historian Rosemary C. Hanna’s documentary film “Nassau’s Over-the-Hill” premiered in the Ballroom at Government House to an overflow crowd on Thursday, 27th February 2014.

The film concisely tells the story of the fashioning of a people whose ancestors were transplanted to a foreign land under the most dehumanizing conditions and have, in a relatively short period, changed the history of a former plantation society.

The Production Team is comprised of Rosemary C. Hanna, Executive Producer, Kevin G. Turnquest, Producer and Editor, and Patrice Francis, Script Writer and Narrator.

The-Production-Team2

The Production Team: (LtoR) Patrice Francis, Script Writer and Narrator, Kevin G. Turnquest, Producer and Editor, and Rosemary C. Hanna, Executive Producer.

Over-the-Hill was the place where freed black slaves and their descendants lived. The film focuses on the outstanding citizens of that community who played active roles in their churches, family units and in the wider society. Education, character development and enterprise were seen as means of true liberation and advancement in the colonial setting, hence a broad scope of character traits and achievements by our people are featured throughout the film.

Many of the country’s eminent citizens, leaders and national builders were born and raised Over-the-Hill and the film highlights their contributions and personal sacrifices in the struggle towards black equality, the attainment of voting rights, the achievement of majority rule and independence.
