New Initiatives from the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs:

There are three new priority initiatives that Mayor de Blasio and Commissioner Julie Meinn currently are expanding: 1) Free financial counseling through the Office of Financial Empowerment, 2) Paid Sick Leave, and 3) Small Business Relief. These initiatives will help bring awareness to the new Paid Sick Leave law and new services that are being offered to 1.5 million New Yorkers.

ACES Volunteers for Your Organization:

The Community Service Society’s ACES Project has a unique opportunity for your agency. The program trains volunteers, age 55+, to serve as public benefit counselors and places them in hospitals, senior centers and community-based agencies. ACES volunteers work directly with clients screening for public benefit eligibility and assisting with applications. Volunteers serve one day a week. LaGuardia Community College is now recruiting for the Home to Work Program. The Home to Work Program offers free computer skills training, customer service training and assistance with job placement for all displaced homemakers. The term "displaced homemaker" means an individual who has worked in the home, providing unpaid household services for family members; is not gainfully employed; has had, or would have difficulty in securing employment; and has been dependent on the income of another family member but is no longer supported by such income, or has been dependent on federal assistance but is no longer eligible for such assistance, or is supported as the parent of minor children by government assistance or spousal support. Reading Partners is a national education nonprofit dedicated to improving students’ reading skills. We work in Title I elementary schools to support students from low-income communities who are reading 6 months to 2.5 years below grade-level. Hostos Community College Study Abroad Program:

Hostos' Study Abroad Programs provide opportunities for CUNY students, faculty, and staff to increase their understanding of the history, culture, and language of other communities and countries throughout the world. Since 1992, Hostos Community College and Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) have collaborated in a series of very successful academic exchange programs involving both faculty and students. In 1998, this institution entered into an academic exchange agreement with Interamerican University in San Germán, Puerto Rico. Hostos' other partners in academic exchanges include universities in Puerto Rico, Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Spain, and Universidad de la Habana in Cuba. CMS Announces Opportunity To Apply For Navigator Grants:

LaGuardia Community College's Justice Community Program offers community benefit projects and civic engagement, transferable job skills to help build an individual’s resume, career counseling, job readiness workshops, mentoring and leadership opportunities, and a chance to earn up to $300 a month and metro cards for achieving program goals ($1,350 max). In order to qualify an individual must: be between the ages of 16-24, have had some type of criminal involvement within the past year/an individual who is at risk of having criminal involvement, and someone who is on probation/parole.
