Welcome to the first edition of Whale's Tales – the new, monthly newsletter of Balmoral Sailing Club. Whether you're 5, 45 or 85, I'm hoping you'll find something of interest in each issue. There'll be a regular section for Little Tackers, updates on what's happening at your club, news, occasional interviews, tips and much more. It's your newsletter so please email me with any suggestions or feedback.

See you on the water soon,

Why is there a whale on the BSC burgee?

Whaling Boat Tail

Whales have been regular visitors to Sydney Harbour and in the early years of the colony, Chowder Bay was used as an anchorage for visiting American whalers. In 1831 Archibald Mosman and John Bell were granted land in Mosman Bay to establish a whaling station.

Mosman Whaling Station

Two years later the whaling station was completed and the local whaling industry flourished for more than a decade. The whale on the Balmoral Sailing Club burgee reflects this history and recognises that, like these noble marine visitors, club members may also expect both pleasure and challenges in these beautiful waters.

BSC AGM – be there and you could win $10,000!

Just kidding… but at least you're reading on. Member involvement is the hallmark of a great club so remember to attend the AGM. Even if you don't want to stand for the Board, at least let those who are running your club know that they are doing a great job… or what you'd like them to do better or differently!

Steve Thomas, who for years has done a sterling job as Honorary Treasurer, has indicated that he intends to stand down from the role – preferably this year but next year at the very latest. If you have a financial leaning and would like to nominate for the position, Steve will be very happy to provide as much or as little support as you need to help you settle into the role.

Email Lorraine Madden, Honorary Secretary if you'd like to nominate for the Board or to tender an apology for the AGM.

AGM – Saturday 3rd August – 5pm @ the Clubhouse

Little Tackers...

If you're under 13 and know about whales you could win a prize.

Here's the first question… What species of whale was Moby Dick? (Hint: Visit the Library of The Discovery and read about the History of Whaling)

Discovery kids-education

Climb aboard The Discovery to learn more about Whales and Dolphins

There'll be two more questions – one in August and one in September. When you have all 3 answers, send them to me along with your name and age.

Want to reduce the cost of foreshore parking?

Annual parking stickers for Mosman and non-Mosman residents can be purchased for Saturday parking in the Balmoral Foreshore Car Park. Please be aware that the BSC Board is currently negotiating with Mosman Council in a bid to obtain an even better rate for those BSC members who are not residents in the Mosman area. So, cross your fingers… and check the August issue of Whale's Tales before you buy your parking sticker for this season. We'll also post details on the Balmoral Sailing Club's Facebook Page.
