Dear St. Andrew's Families,

The above is not the best quality visual you’ll see in this week’s email, but I chose to lead off with it because it represents the best of what we try to do at St. Andrew’s. Those eight VI Formers represented the second shift of students helping with "Code Purple" on Thursday night.

With temperatures in the low 20s, these guys kicked into gear and, led by Chaplain Jay Hutchinson and Tom Fritz, hit the streets of Wilmington searching for the homeless in the hopes of convincing them to spend the night in a shelter.

It also represents what happens when kind, talented, and fun teenagers get to live with each other. They clearly want to be together and show no signs of how unusual it is for 17- and 18-year olds to do what they were asked to do that night.

Tad reminded us today that St. Andrew’s is ultimately a reflection of its students. In these times when the country is engulfed in consumption, these guys seem to have their priorities and hearts right where they should be.

Sincerely,
Will Robinson ‘97

A Simple Kindness

In a moment of life imitating art this week, George Saunders offered Tad a simple kindness by sending along the following message after reading his recent essay on the Tenth of December:

"That's a beautiful and generous essay — please thank Mr. Roach for it. Made my night."

His note made Tad's night. You can read the essay on our blog.

In the Classroom

Fred Geiersbach and Elizabeth McGiff collaborated on the final class of the Introduction to the Arts cycle. Students in Fred's music composition class shared their compositions with Elizabeth's ceramics students before debating which ceramic tiles best matched the emotion and style of each piece.

Stop-Motion Animation

Miller Murray '15 continues to pursue his interest in animation and recently asked Ben Winiarczyk P'15,'17 to lead a session on stop-motion animation. Ben was kind enough to share his expertise and answer questions about his work as founder of Blit, Inc., a leading interactive game development company.

Chess Champion Sparks Craze

A few weeks ago we wrote about Abu Kamara '16 and how he's taken his love of chess to successful finished in tournaments around the country. He's also been successful getting other students interested in the game. His portable board came out right after chapel on Wednesday.

Tuesday Two-Step

In addition to several club meetings, there were two opportunities for students to learn and explore on Tuesday night between dinner and study hall. John Burk and Dave Myers hosted a very successful Hour of Code with students learning basic computer programming language. This scene repeated on Thursday night as part of a worldwide movement to bring computer science education to more students.

Just down the hall, Dr. Alexandra Cox '97 led a discussion about how and why we incarcerate teenagers. Alexandra is a leading expert in the field and was on campus to meet with RS6 Ethics students earlier in the day.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!

If you haven't already, please let Dave Miller know your child's transportation needs for Christmas break by emailing him at damiller@standrews-de.org.

The Dean's Office would like to remind families how important it is for students not to miss classes as they make travel arrangements.

The Environmental Stewards are encouraging families to consider purchasing carbon offsets for travel. Carbonfund.org makes it easy to purchase carbon offsets for your christmas travel. You can purchase from preset packages where it costs $11 to offset carbon emissions for a flight less than 6,000 miles or use their calculator to determine the exact offset needed for travel by type (car, plane, train) and distance.
