The Central Bank Art Gallery, Market Street
The Central Bank of The Bahamas Art Gallery presents the solo exhibition ‘Decoding Salvation,’ a body of work by Bahamian artist Jace McKinney that deals with the concept of salvation from his personal struggles, which in turn revealed collective concerns faced by modern society. The show runs from September 11th – 30th 2013, opening reception September 12th at 6:00pm.
Salvation is as old as mankind and it is the very thing that breathes hope into an unknown future. By nature, we don’t want to die, but we know that it is an inevitable fact for every human being. When we lose a loved one, there is a great sense of helplessness that we tend to feel. In moments like these we wish for the power to resurrect that loved one from the dead. If it were in our strength we would fight death itself like Hercules wrestling for the soul of Alcestis. Alas, the keys of life and death are not in our hands, yet the soul still cries out “save me.”
The 2012 winner of the prestigious Central Bank of The Bahamas Art Competition, Jace McKinney holds his BFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). As a fine artist and storyteller, Jace is known for his surreal illustrations and sculptures that are inspired by the visual elements of ‘Junkanoo’, and the unique religious and folklore traditions of Bahamian culture. His work merges the ordinary and mundane with the fantastical, dreamlike spiritual journey of the human soul.
Jace’s work has been published in children’s books, international magazines, newspapers and literary journals; and has been exhibited in The Bahamas, the United States and the Hawaiian islands. Jace is presently enrolled in the seminary program at Andrews University where he is pursuing a Masters of Divinity degree. Correlating with his studies, Jace’s artwork currently explores the subject of salvation.
