Jim Flaherty, Canada's longest serving finance minister, passed away yesterday (Thursday April 10th). As reported in our March 21st national communication Minister Flaherty resigned last month. He had planned to spend more time with his family in this next phase of his life.
Minister Flaherty was deeply respected in the House of Commons by members of all parties. He is regarded for steering Canada through the global economic shaking of 2008 and proclaimed by some to be the most respected finance minister in the world during that time.
In shock the House of Commons adjourned today upon hearing the announcement. The Conservative caucus met to absorb the announcement together and statements in honour of Minister Flaherty have already been made by the Prime Minister and several other prominent Members of Parliament.
Please agree with us in prayer for Minister Flaherty's family, many friends across Canada and internationally who are all grieving his passing.
