"DRAWN TO WATER" Photo Installation Series To Feature Work from Notable Photographers On-Board Vessels

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New York, NY
May 13, 2013

NY Waterway’s East River Ferry, operated on behalf of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), and United Photo Industries (UPI) today announced a new photo series, “Drawn to Water: A Floating Photographic Exhibition,” that will be installed on-board the ferries. The first exhibit will open to passengers beginning on Monday, May 13, and continue throughout the summer months with a new exhibition opening monthly. The series will include works curated by United Photo Industries' Sam Barzilay, Dave Shelley and Laura Roumanos, and guest curators from a group of renowned photographers, including Brooklyn-based artist Joni Sternbach’s “SurfLand,” which employs the historic wet-plate collodion process, creating one-of-a-kind tintypes that are imbued with a feeling of ambiguity, timelessness and mystery.

“We are constantly thinking of ways to expand upon our core product in order to make the ferry a more enjoyable experience for our riders,” said Paul Samulski, Creative and Marketing Director at Billybey Ferry Company which operates the East River ferries. “We respect the work that UPI produces, so we are grateful to have this opportunity to team up with them again.”

The concept was born from when the East River Ferry partnered with UPI during last summer’s Photoville project in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Photos will be installed on the three dedicated East River Ferry vessels operating Monday through Friday and will highlight a series of photographs that tie-in water as their central theme. In addition to Sternbach, May’s exhibits include Stephen Mallon’s “Next Stop: Atlantic,” and David Doubilet’s “Underwater Creatures.” July’s exhibits will include Andreas Franke’s “The Sinking World: The Vanderberg Project,” Corey Arnold’s “Fish Works - Bering Sea,” and Eric Prinvault’s “Koh Lanta Urak Lawoi.”

“Through the lens of talented photographers, East River Ferry passengers will travel a world connected, dominated, and defined by water,” said Laura Roumanos, Executive Producer at United Photo Industries. “From David Doubilet’s poetic photos of underwater creatures, to Joni Sternbach’s timeless tintype portraits of surfers across the world, and Stephen Mallon’s fascinating images of subway cars tossed into the Atlantic to form new coral reefs, these are just the start of a journey that will take us across the seven seas.”

“As an integrated transit service connecting neighborhoods across the city, we see great value in adding public art to this space on the East River Ferry that is accessed by thousands of New York City residents and visitors each day,” said NYCEDC Executive Director Kyle Kimball. “Since its launch two years ago, the East River Ferry has carried over 1.9 million passengers across New York City, and the ‘Drawn to Water’ series will serve to expand the ferry’s already growing ridership, further delivering an exciting environment for riders.”

The ferries with the photo exhibitions will operate weekdays from 6:40 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. EDT. The East River Ferry connects east Midtown at 34th Street in Manhattan with Long Island City in Queens; Greenpoint, North and South Williamsburg, and DUMBO in Brooklyn; South Manhattan at Wall Street / Pier 11; and, in the months that it is open, Governors Island.

STEPHEN MALLON

Next Stop: Atlantic

In 2009, Mallon made a big splash with “Brace for Impact: The Salvage of Flight 1549,” a series of photographs documenting the salvaging of the US Air flight that airline captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger managed to safely emergency-land in the Hudson River on January 15, 2009. The images Mallon produced during his two-week effort with Weeks Marine have been in exhibitions in New York, Miami, St. Louis, and Philadelphia and featured on television such as MSNBC, NBC, New York Magazine Vanity Fair, and CBS News. In 2010 Stephen’s following solo exhibition “Next Stop Atlantic” was received with great praise from the likes of The New York Times, National Public Radio, GQ, The Atlantic, Fast Company, and GQ. This body of work has been shown at the Look 3 photo festival in Charlottesville, Miami, St. Louis, and Rome.

DAVID DOUBLIET

Underwater Creatures

David Doubilet has had a long and intimate view of the sea. David began making pictures underwater at age 12 using a Brownie Hawkeye camera stuffed into a rubber anesthesiologist bag. Since his first assignment in 1971 David Doubilet has published nearly 70 stories in National geographic to become one the most published photographers in the history of the magazine. David has spent five decades descending beneath the surface in the far corners of the world from interior Africa, equatorial coral reefs, and rich temperate seas to beneath the polar ice. David considers photography is a language that creates a visual voice for the oceans that connects us to the beauty and silent devastation happening within the invisible world below.
