Hi everyone! It's your bear Jigsaw here. You've heard quite a bit from me of late and although the limelight brought out the sheen on my fur rather nicely, I've decided to shine its light on another bear. I'm a bit of a poetry novice (as you can tell :o) so I've decided to share part of a moving poem written by my Chengdu bear buddy Dick (and kindly "recorded" by Caroline Herd of the UK), about how his life has changed since being rescued by Animals Asia. (I think Dick's a bit of a rapper, given the poem's style!) His photo's a bit fuzzy - perhaps a hasty "selfie" or begrudgingly snapped by his roomie, Dong Fong ... but he tells a great story! |
DickieBear Dugmore, Poet |
My name is Dick, it’s ok you can smile, (think I’m “Dickiebear Dugmore” somewhere on my file),
My picture is framed on a little boy's wall, and I’m part of a family I don’t know at all. But their name's on my door, and my name's in their heart, and they’ve followed my story, though not from the start. And they send me some money in pounds or in yen and it helps keep me safe living here, in house 10. |
His mate, Dong Fong, in tougher times... |
My best friend's Dong Fong, he’s a moon bear like me. He was born on a bile farm 2003. He’s a headbanging oddball but his heart's made of gold; he plays rough and smells bad, doesn’t do as he’s told,
And we’d like to be wild but we live here instead, since we’ve seen what a bear trap can do to a leg. And we’ve felt what it’s like with a cage for a den, so we’d rather be here, living safe in house 10. |
My hammock is wonky (all thanks to Dong Fong), and he’s bit off the end of our rubber toy Kong, We wrestled too hard in our tree climbing frame, he snapped off a branch and then I got the blame.
He likes to dig holes where no one can see, and then I fill them in (but I say it’s not me), So he digs a load more, and I fill them again, we’re a little bit “special” us bears from house 10. |
Plumb sauce is nice, but it seems strange to me, that they hide it or paint it half way up a tree. The mangos are hidden, my nose is on fire, I can smell a mince pie - why’s it under a tyre?
My mum would have loved this, wish she was here too, I think of her sometimes, wish it all wasn’t true. I hate how they took me and what happened then. Maybe one day they’ll find her, bring her home to house 10...... |
Life doesn't get much better than this ..but MORE bears DESERVE it... CLICK ME to help! |
He's a pretty special bear, Dickie Bear Dugmore!! ! Rehabilitation for us bears isn't always straightforward but life is certainly a whole lot BETTER, now we live at Animal Asia's Bear Rescue Centres.
BUT AAF still needs all the support you can send on our behalf....'cos we're just the lucky ones....

It mightn't mean a lot to you, but to us bears it promises a world of difference to our health checks and recovery times. Romain Pizzi, veterinary surgeon at Edinburgh Zoo and founder of Wildlife Surgery International, brought his special skills to our Vietnam surgery to teach the staff here how to perform keyhole examinations and surgeries. Not only that but he donated much of the equipment needed to continue the work!
For bears rescued from bear bile farms, it’s vital vets are able to monitor internal damage. Working with Romain and implementing laparoscopy techniques means the difference between us bears undergoing major exploratory operations followed by a month recovering in a small cage (boring! sore!) versus re-joining our friends in the enclosures the following day (Yeah!! Day surgery!! Home in time for tea!!). |
C'mon everyone! Gather your buddies and collect $80 for a piece of the action! |
Thank you everyone who has helped to get ME moving along in my 4th puzzle - we are 1/3 of the way to our total, with almost $3000 raised in 3 months. A couple more pieces and $4000, and we'll be halfway there.. Sal and I reckon the more of me you can see, the merrier so why not make your donation soooon |
