Greetings everyone!

I am pleased to announce that I will be presenting Using your organizational blog as a centerpiece in your social media strategy at the PRSA Mid-Atlantic District Chesapeake Conference. The conference takes place on June 25 in Columbia, Md.

Do you know of an organization or company that has a great blog? If so, please let me know. I am looking for some great, varied examples to share during the presentation.

There are some great organizational blogs out there, but are they hosted on a great website? I offer some thoughts below on what makes for a good website.

Enjoy the Memorial Day weekend, and a have a very happy unofficial start to summer.

Deborah

Practical, informative websites drive business

Although not every type of business needs a website, having one helps people to find you. More importantly, your website helps potential customers decide whether to do business with you or not. And yet we see countless websites that are not very good. You can judge a business by its website, as I wrote on my blog last year.

Recently, I have come across websites that are getting caught up in design and esthetics while forgetting about usability and providing the information their audiences need. I am not saying looks don’t matter—they do—but not more than content and usability. I would rather have a simple website that is practical and informative than a fancy website full of flash and music and graphics that makes it hard to find out what I need to know.

If I land on your home page, will I know what you do and who you are? If I need to go to your location, will I be able to find that information easily? If your website is making it hard for people to get answers to the basic questions of who, what, where and why, then your website is not performing optimally.

Some website owners and/or designers get so carried away with creativity, they decide to buck convention and use different terms for commonly used page names. I am not talking about using Our Story instead of About Us. I am talking about using terms like “morsels” instead of blog. Don’t make me try to decipher what you mean!

In sum, you can strengthen your brand and drive business when you maintain a practical, informative and visually appealing website.

Communications tip: Keep social media up to date

Is your LInkedIn profile up to date, with a current photo (and please don’t say you don’t have a photo!)? Have you posted on your blog within the past month? When was the last time you tweeted? If your answer is no or not recently, then perhaps you don’t have the time or the interest in maintaining particular social media accounts. If that is the case, perhaps you should delete the accounts that you don’t keep up with. Social media accounts that are not current create a negative perception about you.
