Dear friend,

I got some pretty amazing email responses from my last newsletter. Apparently the idea of "resetting" hit a nerve with many people. I hope if you were one of them, you feel a little better about how to start over. As I always say, every meal is a new chance to make a better choice.

Are you committed to eating healthy but get pressure from people around you to jump ship? I hear this often. It's pretty common for well-meaning family and friends to try to veer you off course in the name of "a special occasion" or "just one bite won't hurt" or "you're on vacation." I don't think these people in your life mean you any real harm, they just don't realize how these types of comments can affect your healthy eating mojo!

So this week I've got a few of my trusted tips and strategies for dealing with these saboteurs in your life, plus a favorite summertime strawberry-spinach-quinoa recipe that I can't get enough of!

Until next time,

Confident Eater: How to Stay On Track

woman-flexing-muscles

You've been working hard at eating healthy and you're starting to feel really great, but it feels like everyone around you is getting in your way. Sound familiar?

Don't eat to please others.

You don’t need your friends, family, or co-worker's blessing to eat healthy -- what you eat is your business.

However, if you're finding it hard to stay on track because of pressure from people in your life, here's my advice.

Nip the negatively in the bud!! You absolutely must talk to the people in your life that don't support your healthy living efforts. You don't have to embarrass them at Sunday dinner or make a scene in the lunch room at work, but you should explain to them why you want to eat and live healthier and why you need their support.

Tell them what’s really in it for you. Be clear about your specific and personal why -- the real reason you’ve decided to live a healthier lifestyle. Tell them you want to feel better, be happier, live longer, have more energy. You want to be a better spouse, parent, sister or brother, daughter or friend. You want to wake up with energy and be more successful at work, set a good example for your kids, get off medication. Explain how you were feeling before the changes you’ve made and how you feel now. Once a friend or family member realizes the deeper meaning behind your choices, you'll find they're happy for you and you become an inspiration to them.

If you can’t get them to come around -- and this happens -- well then it's time to consider the value they have in your life. Consider limiting the time you spend with these people if it really upsets you to be around them. If friends continue to be negative or interfere with your efforts, it might be time to upgrade your inner circle.

Ultimately you have to ask yourself how willing you are to defend your healthy living choices, even if it breaks the old family dynamic or the status quo.

I've always said that changing any behavior is like building a muscle. And just like pumping iron, it takes time to get those muscles to grow. Think of the naysayers in your life as opportunities to flex those newly acquired muscles. The more you flex them, the easier it will be to deal with the pressure.

Confident Kitchen: Strawberry Spinach Quinoa Salad

strawberry quinoa salad

This light and tasty summer salad is a perfect go-to for barbecues, parties or just a weekday lunch. Add some goat/feta cheese, diced chicken, or shredded salmon if you want more protein. Switch up the nuts, use kale instead of spinach or just eat it as is! However you make it, I know you'll love it!

Strawberry Spinach Quinoa Salad

For the vinaigrette:
* 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
* 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
* 2 Tbsp raw honey
* 1 tsp Dijon mustard
* Pinch of sea salt and pepper to taste

For the salad:
* 1 cup quinoa, cooked
* 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
* 2 big handfuls fresh baby spinach, chopped
* ¼ cup chopped walnuts
* 2-3 scallions, chopped

Directions:
In a blender, add all of the ingredients for the vinaigrette. Blend until thick and creamy and set aside. In a large bowl add the quinoa and the spinach. Gently fold the spinach into the spinach until well incorporated. Add the strawberries and scallions. Add in half the vinaigrette and toss well to combine. Top with walnuts.
