Dear Friend,

I am writing this on the way back from the Republican National Committee Winter Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Based on my conversations there, it is clear that Republican leaders are determined to learn the lessons of 2012 and make significant steps toward becoming a more modern and inclusive party.

Governor Bobby Jindal's keynote speech was a good example of the thinking that is beginning to move Republicans. At the meeting, Governor Jindal called for a new emphasis on economic growth and jobs as a key step toward balancing the budget. His rejection of an austerity strategy in favor of a growth strategy is exactly right and should be considered by every Republican.

The re-election of Reince Priebus as Chairman of the Republican National Committee is a good step toward building a modern and inclusive grassroots party. His acceptance speech at the RNC Winter Meeting was very compelling.

Prior to serving as RNC Chairman, Reince’s work in Wisconsin was both effective and impressive. His hard work as the Wisconsin State GOP Chairman laid the base for Scott Walker's election as Governor. Callista and I have known Reince for many years and believe he will continue to serve as a strong RNC Chairman.

Prior to the RNC Winter Meeting, Reince asked me to outline and share new ideas for the Republican Party, which I did in this memo. In my address at the RNC Winter Meeting, I continued to elaborate on these thoughts. The news media gave them some very favorable coverage and RNC members gave them several standing ovations.

Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to honor Rodney Cook, Sr. of Atlanta who recently passed away. He was a dear friend and mentor to me for over 50 years. This week, I wrote a column remembering his achievements. Rodney Cook was one of the volunteers who helped create the modern Georgia GOP, so it seems especially fitting to honor him in this newsletter.

Your Friend,
Newt
