Newsletter #1!

Thank You!

Hello and thank you for registering for Photostock 2014! This is going to be the best gathering yet and I am very happy you'll be there to share in the good times.

This is the first, official newsletter to go out for the event and it is mainly to assure you that your registration has been received. Please accept my apology at not communicating this sooner, but as you can imagine, there has been a lot going on around here and we've been hard at work pulling everything together.

We are now nearing 70 strong and from looking at the names of those already onboard, it is going to fantastic group. In addition to the veterans of gatherings past, I see a lot of new and exciting names as well. We also have some very talented and accomplished presenters whom I'll be sharing more about in future newsletters. So many talented people in one place is bound to get the creative juices flowing and give us our yearly dose of Photostock inspiration.

There will be more information coming in a series of these newsletters as the gathering draws near. For now, I'll briefly go over several things that will be covered in more detail in upcoming letters. Please read on!

Your Arrival

When you arrive this year, there will be a check-in location where you will pick up your registration packet. This will include your lanyard and pass that I hope you'll wear while hanging around. It will be personalized with your name and will help everyone get to know each other, remember names, etc.

Check in will be available starting at 2:00PM on Thursday, June 19th under the big "circus" tent at the rear of the courtyard. Be sure to get over there after settling and get yourself signed in.

Lodging

I understand that the Birchwood Inn is filling fast and that there may only be larger rooms left there. If any of you have friends going and don't mind doubling up, consider going in on a larger room. There are also a lot of vacation rentals in the area and I already know of several people going in on these.

The nearest hotel to the Birchwood is the Best Western in nearby Harbor Springs. There is also a Comfort Inn a little further down the road in Petoskey. These are the closest, but there are many other options for lodging in the area. Please see the Lodging section of the Photostock Fest website for links.

What to Bring

The answer to this is pretty much whatever you want, but there are a few things you'll want to have for sure. There will be more on this as the event draws closer, but for now, have a look at the "What to Bring" section of the website for more information.

Workshops!

There's Still Room!

As you probably know, there are 2 workshops being offered this year that i think will be excellent. The featured workshop with the fantastic Holly Roberts begins on Monday, June 16. This is one not to be missed and will be Holly's only workshop east of the Mississippi this year, let alone up in our little neck of the woods. It is an opportunity that won't come again soon and I am proud to have Holly among us this year.

The other workshop is a less involved, but no less fun and rewarding. This one is with the very talented Eliot Dudik and Meg Griffiths and runs during the gathering in the afternoons of Friday and Saturday up at the Photostock Workshop near Cross Village, Michigan. Participants in this workshop will be making cyanotypes as well as learning to bind the resulting images into personal books to take with them.

Both of these workshops would be a great addition to your time at Photostock and I hope you'll give them some consideration. Also, basic registration in included with the workshop fees, so if you do sign up, your registration fee will be refunded in full. See the Workshops section of the website for more or go to the following links for more specific information and registration.

Local Color

Lake Michigan is Thawing!

Before signing of, I'd like to add a little local color to get you excited about the gathering and the beautiful area you'll be visiting.

As you know, it's been a brutal winter and the Great Lakes all but completely froze over this year. Well, I was up there checking on things and making arrangements and can report that the ice is finally melting. In fact, I made this short film with hopes you'll have a look and enjoy!
