Welcome Spring!!

Aren't you glad spring weather is finally here!! I know I am. Spring gets my creative juices flowing when I play with designs and fabric. It also makes me hungry to enjoy the great outdoors after being cooped up in the winter. (Not that our New Mexico winters ever get that bad.) So spring is a conflicting time for me - play outdoors? - or - play with fabric? - a good choice either way! I just finished teaching a week long class at Quilting Adventures in the Texas Hill Country. I love to teach multi-day workshops where students have ample time to absorb new material while, at the same time, design and piece their own original design.

My next five-day design class will be on June 5-9, 2013. I'll be teaching for Seams Like Home in Anchorage Alaska. The retreat will be held at Stillpoint Lodge in Halibut Cove, Alaska. To read more about my class, click here.

There are still a few openings in my class. I'll be teaching "Flying Colors - Putting it All Together". I'd love for you to join me! We'll have time both for sewing and enjoying being outside in the great Alaska scenery. We'll watch wildlife and birds and maybe do some sea kayaking!

Rainbow Crow - Finished!

Indigo Crow 1

Rainbow Crow © 2013 by Gail Garber

Done! Finally! Rainbow Crow tells the story of the most beautiful bird in the world with the most beautiful song. (Pieced by Gail Garber and quilted by Kris Vierra).

Once upon a time, the world went dark and the animals were frightened. The great gods in the sky had stolen the light from the world! The animals wondered what to do to return the light and save their world. Rainbow Crow, who was strong and brave, volunteered to fly to the gods and ask that the light be returned.

Indigo Crow 2

Rainbow Crow flew and flew high into the sky. His muscles were weary but he kept on flying higher. Finally, when exhaustion threatened to overcome him, he arrived at the home of the Gods. With his beautiful song, he asked them to return the light. Perhaps because the Gods so enjoyed his enchanting song, they consented. The Gods gave Crow a burning torch to carry the light back to Earth.

Rainbow Crow departed for the long flight home.Crow flew and flew and, as he winged his way homeward, the smoke singed his iridescent feathers and made his beautiful voice harsh and raspy!

Indigo Crow 3

Finally, he returned the light to the Earth. All the animals and they were happy. But Crow was very sad. He cried because his once beautiful feathers were now blackened and, instead of a rapturous song, he had only a croak for a voice.

Today, if you look closely at the feathers of a crow or raven in just the right light, you can see all the colors of the rainbow reflected in them. The rainbow still exists!

Indigo, A Hawks Aloft Educational Crow

Crows and ravens, members of the corvid family of birds, are the most intelligent birds in the world. I just finished reading a wonderful book, Gifts of a Crow, by John Marzluff and Tony Angell. If you admire these birds as I do, you will find this a fascinating read.

Exciting News!!

Gail Garber Azimuth Quilt WEB

Azimuth, © 1989, by Gail Garber

I was thrilled to recently learn that two of my quilts have been acquired by the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky. I was hoping to find a good home for the quilts and the National Quilt Museum was my first choice! Azimuth is entirely hand-stitched between 1984-1989. My earlier quilts were traditional with conservative fabric choices.

After taking that first quilting class in 1980, by 1984 I began exploring original design. My first effort was Azimuth. It is a king-size medallion style quilt that features a Mariner’s Compass in the center and variations of the compass throughout the quilt. It is entirely hand pieced and hand quilted. This award winning quilt has been displayed at quilt venues throughout the U.S. and overseas.

Cosmic-Parade

Cosmic Parade © by Gail Garber

Cosmic Parade, © 2000, is in my more recent style of quilts. It is featured on the cover of my second book, Stellar Journeys. By the time I made this quilt I had formulated my own Flying Geese style and had become an art quilter. Cosmic Parade represents three large stars on parade with free-form flying geese wandering among the star floats in the parade. The background is made up of larger tone-on-tone geese in grays and blues with the Pointy Dude border. It also has won awards and been displayed at quilt venues throughout the US and overseas.

As I write this today, they should be hanging both quilts which have become part of the permanent collection. Their plan is to have them on display for several months. Three of my girlfriends and I will be in Paducah in just two short weeks to see them preview! Watch for my next newsletter and I'll tell you all about our trip.

Hawks Aloft Raffle Quilt

Misc 011

My little cabin in the mountains is the setting for the annual Hawks Aloft Quilt Retreat. We gather there each winter to attempt to stitch the quilt top in one weekend.

This is by far and away our most popular event of this year. The cabin can sleep 14 people, with some sleeping on the floor, and that's exactly how many we have each year!

Sweatshop 2013 Style

It's a cozy event, kind of like a nice warm sweatshop! All the stitchers are squished together in the living room near the old wood stove.

Rhianna and Olivia

This year, our youngest stitchers were Olivia Rodriquez, age 10 and Rhianna Roberts, age 12. Neither young lady had used a sewing machine before coming to retreat! This was Rhianna's second year at retreat. She is now an avid sewer, designing and making many of her own clothes.

Steve and Ed

The guys like to come to retreat too! Meet Steve and Ed. We call him Eddie the Ripper! Guess what his job is! Not only does he remove the paper, he precisely measures and cuts all the fabric pieces and prepares little packets for each block or border the quilt. It makes the process go so much faster.

Steve is one of our old timers and has been coming to retreat for over 10 years now. He's an ace stitcher and our official photographer too!

Middle Quilt - almost done

By early afternoon on Saturday, we had finished the center of the quilt top. This year's design was inspired by a wonderful piece of oriental fabric by Hoffman Fabrics. All the other fabrics were selected to complement the focal fabric.

Sharing a laugh

Of course, one of the main attractions of retreat is the camaraderie and togetherness. By late Saturday afternoon, when only a couple of quilters could sew, the rest adjourned to the tiny little kitchen for appetizers and libations! We shared a laugh or two.

2013 Quilt 2752

I am proud to say that by 7 p.m. on Saturday night, the entire top was complete! We dined, chatted, picked up paper, and watched Rango, the movie.

The next morning, most of us gathered on the deck so Steve could take the official photo.

Many thanks to the 2013 Hawks Aloft quilt team:

Front row (l-r) - Laurie Marnell, Sami Sanborn, Steve Elkins, Debbie Caffrey, Anita McSorley. Back row - Cynthia Figueroa-McInteer, Ed Chappelle, yours truly, Chellye Porter, Mary Chappelle. Stitchers not shown: Lizzie Roberts, Rhianna Roberts, Olivia Rodriquez. Other contributors include Donna Barnitz and Michele Hymel.

HAI 2013 Raffle Quilt Cropped - Med

Kris Vierra of Kris' Custom Quilting did the phenomenal quilting. The binding and sleeve and a label are now on the quilt, and it made it's debut at the Monte Vista Festival of the Cranes. Here is a better view of the amazing quilting.
You can purchase your raffle tickets ($1 each or 6/$5 on my website or at the Hawks Aloft website and scroll to the very bottom of the store page.
