Meet An Expert

Sally Mackenzie, PhD

Ruth MacDonald

Dr. Sally Mackenzie is the Alice and Raikes Distinguished Professor of Plant Science in the Center for Plant Science Innovation at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Dr. Mackenzie is a strong advocate for the safe integration of scientific advancements, both transgenic and non-transgenic, for the improvement of agricultural systems to address food shortages predicted for developing countries in the next 10 years. She is frequently sought out to provide public lectures, speak to legislators and address the topic of transgenic crops and misinformation regarding their safety and uses in U.S. agriculture with the media.

Dr. Mackenzie is also mom to two daughters, enjoys healthy eating, riding horses and is an avid bicycler.

Her laboratory conducts research in the area of crop molecular genetics, developing new methods for improving crop productivity and learning how plants respond to their environment. Her research involves both transgenic and non-transgenic approaches, providing her students with insights about how transgenic technologies can be appropriately implemented to improve plant yields, growth performance, and stress tolerance.

She received a B.S. in Biology from the University of California-Davis in 1981, and the PhD in plant molecular genetics from the University of Florida-Gainesville in 1986.
