summer-winter

Dear Reader,

While some of our readers in the northern hemisphere are shivering in wintry blasts, we have been suffering a heatwave almost unprecedented at this time of year in Melbourne.

So, we hope this month's Starlink will add sunshine and warmth to the day for some, but provide 'cool' resources for others who have sweltered with us in the heat. :)

And we have a 'bumper edition' for you this time! :)

You'll find suggestions for your professional library, several workshops, a call for tutors (for those who have the time and inclination), a fundraising resource, great tours for those in aged care, links for early childhood educators, inspirational snippets and, among our recent blog posts, an informal interview with us by a colleague from India.

Finally, don't forget to check our Events Calendar for even more!

Enjoy!

Cheers

News from Innovative Resources

Angels 300px

It's been a while since we last promoted the wonderful products and services provided by St Luke's Innovative Resources, which is the best source we know of in Australia for a very wide range of strength-focused resources and ideas!

Here are a just few examples of current and forthcoming offerings.

Angels: The Strengths of Everyday Kindness
Angels is a set of 52 exquisitely-illustrated, heart-warming cards featuring ‘everyday’ angels. Each card represents an important quality or skill that we may want to celebrate or invite into our family, workplace, classroom and community, such as contentment, peace, assertiveness, clarity, openness, balance or adventure.

Choosing Strengths
In the rich tradition of strength-based conversation-building tools, Choosing Strengths cards are powerful reminders that our use of strengths is in our own heads. We can choose to adopt for ourselves any number of strengths from a huge array of possibilities. This set of 36 cards and its accompanying booklet will be published in April this year.

Tools of the Trade Workshops
‘Tools Of The Trade’ is the name we give to our highly interactive and flexible suite of workshops that showcase an array of our ‘conversation-building' materials, purposefully chosen to be relevant and useful for each audience we present to.

A Touch of Inspiration

inspiration

Here are a few items about the power of dreaming, and of thinking or acting differently.

Meeting Michael is the story of how Mai received more than she gave and 'made a new friend', when she offered to buy a meal for a homeless man.

In February 2011, Thai Military Bank (TMB) launched a campaign entitled “Make THE Difference,” which included making a film to inspire people to start thinking differently. We are sure you'll enjoy watching this five minute film about the Panyee Football Club, which is based on a true story about about a 1986 soccer team. Film makers engaged local village kids to tell the story of the original team members, and it's a wonderfully inspiring story about passion and creative thinking!

Here's an amazing performance of a Bach cantata played one of the most creative and meticulously crafted musical instruments we've ever seen!

What about ending our dependency on fossil fuels of any kind - an impossible dream? Not according to the folk at Solar Roadways! Check out the introduction and vision pages of their website. As George Bernard Shaw once said: You see things; and you say, 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say, "Why not?"

When you find yourself struggling to work out how very different groups of people can possibly manage to communicate well with one another, take heart from this video. A cat and a dolphin teach us all a lesson about getting along.

This may be a 'crafted' performance ... but we find ourselves wondering what hidden musical talents can be unearthed in any workplace! Bop along to this hallway performance of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da and perhaps think about music might be used to lift the spirits of your own workmates.

Dates for Your Diary

Visit our Events Calendar to find details of conferences, workshops, training opportunities, exhibitions and special days to celebrate.

There are several conferences and workshops coming up in April, for example. Apart from those mentioned in this issue of Starlink, there are the National Rural Health and Child Aware Approaches conferences as welll as the Third Sector Expo 2013.

We also found a few surprises among the special day events. For example, 25 April is not only ANZAC Day but also World Malaria Day and Pay It Forward Day! April also includes Creativity and Innovation Week - so why not take the opportunity to play with some of those new or creative ideas you've been thinking about. :)
