RIPTA RESPONDS TO OVERCROWDING ON AIR QUALITY ALERT DAYS

On Air Quality Alert Days, FlexService and all fixed-route RIPTA buses and trolleys are FREE!
To date, the DEM has issue five Air Quality Alerts (6/20, 6/21, 7/7, 7/14, and 7/17).

On Air Quality Alert Days, there is a significant increase in ridership, especially to beaches throughout the state. This year, RIPTA has focused on providing better access to the South County beaches via Route 66 (URI/Galilee), which provides regular year round service to Scarborough, Roger Wheeler and Salty Brine State Beaches Last year, Route 66 buses were overcrowded on Air Quality Alert Days; hundreds of passengers were left stranded.

On Wednesday, June 20th and Thursday, June 21stpassengers seeking service to South County State Beaches gathered as early as 6:00am at Bus Stop “D” in Kennedy Plaza. Immediately, RIPTA’s Street Supervision Team responded by adding extra buses as regularly scheduled buses quickly filled to capacity. This year, RIPTA’s ability to dispatch this high level of service was driven by a newly implemented plan of action developed by RIPTA’s Street Supervision Team and the Operations Planning Department. Throughout the day, passenger counts were closely monitored and service was added as needed; no passengers were left behind. In the afternoon, RIPTA’s Supervision Team reported to Scarborough, Roger Wheeler and Salty Brine State Beaches in order to manage return service to Providence.

Buses were filled to capacity averaging 44 passengers per trip, as RIPTA carried over 2,700 passengers during Air Quality Alert Days in June.

To protect your health, improve air quality and save money, leave your car at home and take the bus on Air Quality Alert Days. The ride’s on us!
