These stone columns were made of stone that was collected off of the property. Note the concrete ceiling above which is the floor of the porch. This construction method waterproofs the patio below.

Contracts with Subcontractors If you plan on being your own general contractor, you will have to hire many subcontractors. Bids should contain a written description of all the material and labor to be supplied by the subcontractor. This bid usually becomes the contract when it is signed and accepted by both parties. Here are a few things that you should be sure are clearly stated:
1. Location of the job, names of both parties, and the nature and scope of the work to be done. 2. Total cost and a payment schedule. 3. Starting and completion dates. (approximate) 4. Responsibility for damage to materials and to the site. 5. Clean up from work provided by sub.6. Permits (who is responsible for obtaining and paying) 7. Sub-contracting. Do not allow your sub to sub out the job to another sub without your permission.

Dudenhoffer.Traps.Vert.lowres

The large windows in the gable of this wall are called trapezoid windows. These were provided by the window company. They have the same exterior cladding as the other windows. These windows could be also be achieved by using "direct set glass" from a local glass supplier. When you are comparing quotes from different log home companies, be sure to ask if this custom glass is included in the quote. As you can imagine, these can have a fairly significant price tag.

Quote of the Month: " I can’t speak for anybody else, but I know what I want. I want “home” to be the place where I feel the most comfortable, the most secure, the most at ease. I want to rest assured that it will shelter me and the ones I love from the storm and from the chaos and confusion that unsettles so much of daily life in these turbulent times." ~Ron Jones, Co-Founder and President of Green Builder Media. This is part of his editorial in a recent issue. If you would like to read the article entitled "Home: Where the Hope Is", click here.
