ROMAN TRAGEDIES
Australian Premiere / Exclusive to Adelaide
Roman Tragedies is the undisputable centrepiece of this year's Adelaide Festival, performed by the Netherlands' largest theatre company Toneelgroep Amsterdam, directed by Ivo van Hove.
Roman Tragedies is a radical reworking of three Shakespeare plays: Coriolanus, Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra, lasting 6 hours. Shattering theatrical conventions, the audience is invited to move around or join the actors on stage: sit on the couch; check the messages on their phone, take pictures or twitter. People can buy drinks and food from the bar on stage. And they can leave the room too; have a walk in the corridor.
Read the interview with one of the actors in the March-April 2014 edition of Holland Focus.
Roman Tragedies is performed at the Festival Theatre, Festival Drive (enter off King William Road) on: Fri 28 Feb @ 6pm, Sat 1 Mar @ 3pm and Sun 2 Mar @ 2pm.
For booking details, go to Adelaide Festival - Roman Tragedies.

The Adelaide Festival have generously offered free double passes to Roman Tragedies for friends of Holland Focus. Send an email with your name and address details to editor@hollandfocus.com before Mon 24 February to go into the draw. |
BigMouth
Exclusive Australian Premiere
A tour de force solo performance from Belgian Valentijn Dhaenens.
With five microphones and unrelenting energy, Dhaenens ingeniously weaves together fragments of some of the most memorable speeches in history, comparing the methods and madness of mankind throughout the ages. BigMouth shows how picking the right words can turn the weakest argument into the strongest, achieve world power, or simply win the hand of a beloved.
From the rousing to the frankly inept, from Socrates to Mohammed Ali, Osama Bin Laden and George W. Bush, BigMouth reveals that the tricks of rhetoric have hardly changed.
BigMouth is performed at the Queen’s Theatre, Playhouse Lane on: Thu 27 Feb @ 8pm, Sat 1 Mar @ 10pm, Sun 2 Mar @ 7.30pm and Mon 3 Mar @ 8pm.
For booking details, go to Adelaide Festival - BigMouth. |
Fight Night
Australian Premiere
Fight Night is a playful and immersive political exploration into our shared crisis of faith in our political processes. Through the lens of a demented night of sanitised violence (the sport of boxing), the audience are taken on a twisting and turning popularity contest placing the spotlight firmly on the cult of celebrity surrounding our political leaders.
Five performers. Five actors. Five Rounds. Your vote. One survivor. This engrossing production explores the intricacies and traps of voting systems and media-driven democracy.
At various points during the production the audience uses hand-held electronic devices to vote for their favourite ‘candidate’. Each candidate fights for their attention, pleads for approval and begs for support, before the audience decides who must leave the stage and finally, which player will deliver the final monologue.
Fight Night is performed at the Queen’s Theatre, Playhouse Lane on: Thu 13 Mar @ 9pm, Fri 14 Mar @ 9pm, Sat 15 Mar @ 7.30pm and 10.30pm, Sun 16 Mar @ 6pm.
For booking details, go to Adelaide Festival - Fight Night. |

Message
The worldwide tour is coordinated by the Anne Frank House and is directed at young people from 11 to 18 years old. “The diary of Anne Frank is a book with a strong message which is still relevant for all young people throughout the world: ‘learn to live together with other communities and respect each other’s culture and habits.’ And that is what we want to explain in this exhibition,” according to Ronald Leopold, general director of the Anne Frank Foundation. “We want to pass on the message to the younger generation. Therefore supplementary material such as a catalogue, a DVD and instructions for guides and schools will be part of the exhibition.” |
The Second World War in 100 Objects
The marbles that Anne Frank played with before she was forced into hiding, which are now held in the collection of the Anne Frank House, will be put on public display during the exhibition The Second World War in 100 Objects at the Kunsthal Rotterdam from 5 February to 5 May 2014.
The set of marbles is one of 100 extraordinary objects from the collections of 25 Dutch war and resistance museums, each of them telling their own stories about the Second World War.

Grondwet Festival Den Haag
Zet zaterdag 29 maart dus alvast in uw agenda!
