JWA Newsletter January/February 2014

Message of the Chairwomen

Dear Friends of the JWA,

The Jewish people are very fortunate to have the opportunity to start anew several times a year. The Mishnah speaks of four “New Years”: The first of Nissan, (the new year for counting the years of the reigns of the ancient kings of Israel); the first of Elul, (the new year for animal tithes); the first of Tishrei, (which is Rosh Hashanah) and the 15th of Shvat, (which is Tu B’Shvat). Add to that the Gregorian calendar’s New Year on January 1st and, because we live in Hong Kong, we also get to enjoy the festivities of the Chinese New Year. That's a lot of opportunities to rethink our lives and start afresh!

A great New Year’s resolution is to get involved and join us at the JWA! You can help plan events, coordinate a committee or simply come along and enjoy, learn, meet and connect. You will never know how great it feels, until you do!

With that in mind, we want to wish you a great 2014, a fruitful Tu B'Shvat and a prosperous year of the Horse!

Warmly,

Ana and Shani
JWA of HK Co-chairwomen

Spotlight on our Beneficiaries

Hayim Association - The Shneider Hospital (For Children fighting Cancer in Israel)

History

The Hayim (“Life”) Association was established in 1984 by parents of children with cancer in order to raise funds for treatment. The association has been instrumental in breakthroughs in the field of pediatric cancer in Israel, changing how the children and their families are treated. Since its foundation, the Hayim Association has been working unremittingly to advance treatment and improve the quality of life of the children and their families.

Aid is given to all children without any distinction of race, creed, nationality, or political conviction.

Funds to hospitals and the Israeli Medical Association

"Hayim" association supports the oncology departments in the hospitals in Israel in order to promote the quality of medical treatment and service. The association funds positions in the medical realm, according to the needs of each oncology department: Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers, Psychologists, Lab Personal and Health Professionals.

"Hayim" association supports the Israeli Society of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (ISPHO) by comparing medical protocols in Israel and abroad, by funding "Data Manager" (which joins the American organization for pediatric oncology – COG) and by funding conferences and professional forums.

The JWA and Hayim

The JWA has been a partner with Hayim for many years now and has helped the Schneider Hospital with many projects. Some of these projects included acquisition of life saving equipment and funding of psychological projects for children and their parents. This year the JWA is funding a project to establish a hospital based palliative care. We understand this project is paramount to alleviate the suffering of the children and their families affected by cancer. The hospital is an amazing centre of hope for children and parents of all walks of life, religion, and nationalities and the JWA is proud to be associated with the Hayim Association and its amazing group of collaborators!

Save the Date

Our second fundraising event of the year is shaping up to be an amazing night! We are keeping its nature a secret for now but be sure to save the date: late May/early June. Keep watching this space for more news! Please note that the April 6th previous date has been rescheduled!
