Welcome!

St. Andrew's is such a vibrant community that delivering news from campus can sometimes feel like using a fire hose to fill up paper cups. I couldn't possible tell you about everything that goes on here in any given day, but we ask our students to do their best so I will try to do the same.

My first effort is through these email blasts that I hope to deliver every Friday while school is session. I will mainly share videos, pictures, transcripts of lectures, news and upcoming events to give you a current snapshot of campus, but I will also sometimes include important information from the various offices on campus.

You can also connect to campus on Facebook, view pictures on Flickr, watch videos on YouTube or even find us on Twitter if you spend time there.

Some of you have asked if you can help by sharing pictures you take throughout the year. Yes! I will gratefully accept any help you are able to offer. Please email me if you take that great shot of the soccer game while I'm at field hockey or that hilarious picture of dorm life. I would love it.

I am also available to answer any questions you might have about the calendar or upcoming events. If I don't know the answer I can usually help find the person who does.

So, whether you are a returning or new family, I welcome you to another great year at St. Andrew's.

Best,
Will Robinson '97

Convocation 2012

ERConvocation

Elizabeth Roach, the Stuart Chair in English, delivered the 2012 Convocation Address this afternoon and inspired students to focus on the greatest learning opportunity they all share — each other. Students took the lead and joined faculty tonight to talk about her message over dinner in the dining hall. You can learn more about Elizabeth's talk as well as read or listen to it on our website.

A Day One Welcome from the Class of 2013

The Class of 2013 began the year with a rousing rendition of "Build Me Up Buttercup" only a few short hours after the move-in day rush. I apologize for the entry point and the video quality. I was just as surprised (and delighted) as the rest of the audience.

Faculty Perspective — The First Day

"Walking into a St. Andrew's classroom for the first time in 15 months, after a refreshing and challenging sabbatical, was a joyous experience. We began with a question: "To what extent should we tolerate the religious positions of others?" Sixteen III Form students, some of whom did not know each other and none of whom knew me, immediately began reflecting carefully on this puzzle. We want to say that we should be unreservedly tolerant, but we realize that there are beliefs, or at least actions, against which we might be morally required to strive. Students tried out different examples, responded to each other, and developed a more nuanced understanding of the concept of tolerance. It felt great to be back!" — Religious Studies Chair Terence Gilheany

Terence returned to the faculty this year after spending 2011-2012 researching religious pedagogy in Israel as a Distinguished Fulbright in Teaching Award-winner
