Dear St. Andrew's Families,

There is no easing back into St. Andrew's. Students and faculty have hit the ground running in classes for the past two days and are looking forward to meeting and working with Rosetta Lee on issues of diversity and inclusivity tonight and tomorrow alongside Student Diversity leaders.

Having just attended a short talk from Rosetta in the Chapel I am all the more excited for her school-wide address tonight, which we will stream live for all who would like to join from afar. Rosetta's personal journey as a young immigrant to U.S. citizen and Harvard grad is filled with humor, life lessons, and inspiration.

We also are mourning the loss of Mike Schuller, our former CFO who most recently served as the Director of Institutional Planning. Many of you were familiar with Mike's courageous battle with cancer, but more importantly his insatiable love of life and St. Andrew's. You can read Tad's short letter to students, faculty, and staff below. His wife, Candy, has asked that we hold off on calls and visits, but cards can be directed to her at St. Andrew's.

All the best,
Will Robinson '97

Headmaster's Forums

Tad recently jump-started Headmaster's Forums again this year with 2013's first focused on the Keystone Pipeline. That conversation held in the Main Common Room featured multiple points of view from faculty members Eric Finch, John Burk, Peter McLean, and others as well as several dozen students. Students and faculty will tackle the U.S. policy on drones next week and subsequent current events throughout the spring.

Proposed Solar Array

One of Mike Schuller's many passions was environmental sustainability and in recent years he worked tirelessly to promote alternative energy sources on campus. Our new Director of Sustainability Diana Burk has built on Mike's great work this year and we are very excited to report that we are in the final stages of a plan that would bring a 634kW solar array to campus (see proposed site behind the facilities building below). We recently placed a bid in a statewide auction to receive incentives to build the array and we will find out the results in late April.

We are simultaneously looking into the possibility of a rooftop solar project. Diana has opened the process up to student volunteers with at least nine in the past day jumping on board to help investigate the potential of rooftop solar in different areas of campus.

News from Town

During your next visit to Middletown you might be pleasantly surprised to find Half Baked Patisserie in the storefront on Main St. where longtime favorite E's Cafe once thrived. The bakery opened today and we are predicting an immediate spike in faculty presence in the Sipprelle Field House cardio room.

Tad's Letter on Mike Schuller

Dear Members of the St. Andrew's Community,

I am very sad to write that our friend and colleague Mike Schuller died Saturday evening in his home at St. Andrew's.

Mike lived a life that was loving, energetic, relentless, and generous.
As a son, sibling, husband, father, and grandfather, Mike celebrated the wonder of life in a brilliant and global family. As a independent school leader, he gave everything to his schools, his communities, indeed the whole world of boarding and day schools. Everywhere he lived and worked, Mike defined the good community with an embrace of service to causes that rescued people in our nation and world.

Even cancer and death found him relentless, resilient, and defiant. He lived and worked and loved throughout each month of his battle. No doctor, no treatment plan could explain just how he kept the disease in retreat for so long. Nor could any of us comprehend the grace and courage of Candy Schuller who acompanied Mike on this journey every step of the way and who showed us all what is possible within the human spirit.

We who loved and appreciated this energy, drive, and resilience celebrate this life and find peace in knowing he is at rest now.

Please keep Mike, Candy, and the Schuller family in your thoughts and prayers and recognize that we are blessed to live in a community that celebrates the joy of life and the sadness of death and the spirit that transcends all.
