Calgary Arts Flood Rebuild fund launches on InvestYYC.com

In the week since the flood there has been an outpouring of support and offers to donate to the arts in Alberta. Calgary Arts Development has launched the Calgary Arts Flood Rebuild project on InvestYYC.com with an aim of directing these offers to the arts community. However, there are many other exciting arts projects on InvestYYC.com that still need support. We hope you consider investing in these other worthy initiatives as well – the show must go on!

Thank you to GOOD Company for the creation of the Calgary Arts Flood Rebuild imagery. Feel free to use the yycOnward logo to promote rebuilding efforts.

The Impact

The 2013 floods have been devastating to the lives of thousands of Albertans and many communities now face a complete rebuild. The arts community did not escape impact. A preliminary assessment shows that many artists and arts organizations have taken a severe hit as a result of the floods. Our earliest estimates have already calculated potential losses of over $3 million in the arts sector, with a large section of the community still unable to assess their losses. In our conversations with artists and arts organizations, we are repeatedly hearing of people and groups facing:

damaged or destroyed venues, offices and homes
loss of equipment or supplies vital to their livelihoods
cancelled contracts, refunded tickets and other lost revenue due to cancelled events

Rebuilding our community: Onward!

Alberta’s arts community shares the resilient spirit of all Albertans. Even in these bleak times, faced with seemingly insurmountable loss, the community has banded together and is offering help and expertise wherever it may be of use. However, the short- and long-term impacts on the arts community are daunting, and financial support is crucial to sustaining the creators who make our towns and cities vibrant places to live--and places worth rebuilding. Alberta's artists and arts organizations will need your help.

How your donation will help

The Calgary Arts Flood Rebuild funds will support artists and arts organizations from across southern Alberta as they recover from the devastating impacts of the flood. The funds will be administered by Calgary Arts Development, in conjunction with other community and government partners from across Alberta whose focus is on direct support of the arts.

Our generous partners at Benevity have agreed to waive their administration fee on all donations made to the Calgary Arts Flood Rebuild. This means that the only deductions from donations will be a 1.9% + $0.30 per transaction fee for credit card charges. Benevity’s gesture allows us to put as much of your donation in the hands of artists and arts organizations as possible. There will be no administration fee levied by Calgary Arts Development or their partners to distribute the funds.

All donations made through InvestYYC.com will receive a charitable tax receipt. If you prefer to make a donation by cash or cheque, please contact info@calgaryartsdevelopment.com. We’re happy to accommodate your request, however at this time only donations made through the website can receive a tax receipt.

If you’d like to support the arts community by providing specific resources or skills, please fill out the Offer Help form on the Calgary Arts Development website.
