Chargers Win State Championship

Austin

Midland Dow capped a remarkable season, taking their fourth straight high school state title, scoring 35 points over runner-up Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central with 23, and placing six flights in the finals, winning five.

Individual winners included Austin Woody at # 2 singles, which set a state record of 80 straight victories, 41 this year. Woody, accompanied by one of the biggest forehands in high school tennis, dominated  Rob Stevens, Portage Central 6-2, 6-3 to win the state championship.

Woody’s streak eclipses the previous standard of 60 set by former Grosse Pointe University Liggett standout and ATP professional Aaron Krickstein from 1981-82. It was Woody’s second individual state championship, having won at # 3 singles as a junior.

Vikram Shanker and Jason Chang, Dow’s #1 doubles duo, beat Mat Denison and Stan Lassen, Battle Creek Lakeview, 6-0,6-3 to win the state crown. This was Chang’s third individual state title, having won at # 3 Doubles in 2010 and at # 2 Doubles last year. The team went 37-0 for the season.

All of the players on the state championship team train at MCTC’s Tennis Academy. Mike Woody is a volunteer coach/consultant to the team and Garret Turner coaches the JV squad and assists with Varsity team. Dow Coach Terry Schwartzkopf said, “I am honored to be part of their lives,” referring to his Four- Peat players and team.

“These are a bunch of hardworking, dedicated and committed student athletes who put the team over individual achievement, yet excelled in both. Congratulations to Coach Terry for a wonderful year,” Woody said.
The matches were played in Grand Blanc, Genesys Athletic Club.
