Dear St. Andrew's Families,

Chaplain Dave DeSalvo asked us to consider praying for our enemies today during our outdoor Chapel Service. I have to admit that praying for the people responsible for Monday's tragic events in Boston was not at the top of (or on) my "to do" list. His ask forced me to think about forgiveness and our collective humanity and it is why I appreciate Dave so much. As Dave illustrated, there is so much good in the world.

We celebrated Earth Week this week with students setting an agenda of education around energy use, resource conservation, and a renewed appreciation for the outdoors. Discussion and debate filled classrooms, dorms, and a Headmaster's Forum on Tuesday.

Avi Gold delivered an absolutely beautiful Wednesday Night Chapel talk on where he shared key moments in his life when he took a leap of faith. The line of students waiting to thank him took 15 minutes to disperse. You can listen to it here.

Finally, please don't be alarmed if your student is exhausted. We all are, but it's been worth it.

All the best,
Will Robinson '97

A Day of Silence

84 students took part in this year's Day of Silence, a day observed around the country by supporters of equality for all, regardless of sexual orientation. Participants remain silent throughout the day in order to raise awareness of the ways — explicit and implicit, deliberate and inadvertent — our society silences members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities and their allies. This deliberate silence becomes an act of protest, and a way to generate further conversation about how we can all help to create a more inclusive community and society.

In the Classroom — IV Form Religion

With events in Boston continuing to unfold Terence Gilheany extended a teachable moment to the St. Andrew's community with the following email today: "While events are moving quickly in Boston, the police at the moment suspect two Chechen brothers perpetrated the marathon attack, one of whom has been killed. To be clear, we have no news on why the brothers committed this attack, if they did.

Wondering about Chechnya? Today seventh period you are welcome to join us in room 12 as we try to get an understandning of Chechnya: its location, and the political, religious and ethnic conflicts it has experienced recently."

Students Find Creativity in "The Ask"

Asking someone to prom has become an art form in recent years with boys upping the ante to woo their dates. Prom itself is VERY casual and should not be confused with the limo, fancy duds extravaganzas depicted so well in 80s movies. The freshman quad (below) went four-for-four asking dates to the big dance during School Meeting this week.
