7th Annual Teen Summer Camp Highlights

camp

We concluded our 7th Annual Teen Summer Camp in Tehachapi, CA in early August and sent camp participants home with smiles on their faces, memories for a lifetime, and best of all, mindfulness, meditation and compassion-in-action tools that will help them build self-confidence and create positive lasting change within themselves and their communities.

Campers participated in a morning Stop, Breathe & Think workshop that rolled right into lunch and then onto afternoon activities, such as fine arts, arts & crafts, sports, yoga, horseback riding, and swimming. The engaging evening activities such as karaoke and gathering around the campfire gave each camper the opportunity to bond as a group. We celebrated the last evening of camp by hosting a surprise ice cream social party.

This camp season, two days prior to camp we hosted the first annual Peer Mentor Training for our peer mentor leaders. We were able to provide our peer mentors opportunities to grow, learn and develop their leadership skills, enhance self-confidence, utilize skills they have learned through Stop, Breathe & Think, and to be part of positive growth of our camp program. In addition, they were instrumental in supporting the campers and activity workshops during the camp week.

We would like to thank all of our Tools for Peace staff, counselors, and volunteers for coming together in making our camp event a very successful one. Also, special thanks to our donors, in-kind contributors and educational partners for their on-going support of the Tools for Peace camp program and believing that our program continues to make a difference in the lives of the students we work with.

Tools for Peace at Aim High

AimHigh-LW

This past July, our facilitators wrapped up our 2nd annual partnership with Aim High summer programs in San Francisco, CA this past July. Tools for Peace worked collaboratively with Aim High at the Yick Wo Elementary School at the Spring Valley Elementary campus and the Lick-Wilmerding campus to provide Tools for Peace’s Stop, Breathe & Think curriculum. “Hearing my students at Aim High talk about actively using mindful breathing and the meditations was really inspiring,” said Erin Phillips, San Francisco-based Tools for Peace Facilitator. Each partnering school experienced our Stop, Breathe & Think curriculum in an Issues and Choices class as well as an Afternoon Activity class. Compassion-in-Action projects included a tape mural that focused on Change and the Gratitude and Appreciation.

“Teaching the Tools for Peace student curriculum at Aim High was an amazing experience on multiple levels. The curriculum fit in extremely well with and enhanced some of the core values of Aim High. Students reported that they learned how to deal with strong emotions like anger in a more positive way, how to calm and relax themselves, and how to concentrate better,” said Shannon Tanton, San Francisco-based Tools for Peace Facilitator.

We would like to thank our friends at Aim High for another wonderful summer program collaboration!

LACER2

"We're excited to have the Tools for Peace club at our Irving campus this year to bring valuable mindfulness and meditation programming to our students. We're also looking forward to collaborating with the club on our community-based projects such as our community garden and community-focused field trips with the students," said Linda Horner, Executive Director, L.A.C.E.R. TOOLS FOR PEACE AT METRO ARTS & TECH HIGH SCHOOL

Metro

Tools for Peace will be going into its third year of programming at Metropolitan Arts & Tech High School (Metro; San Francisco, CA) this fall. We’re excited to work more closely with Metro’s 9th grade advisory teachers this year to bring a Tools for Peace-focused day every week to support Metro’s academic curriculum. Also, in early August, the 9th grade advisory teachers experienced our Stop, Breathe & Think Introductory Training for teachers so they are equipped for the Tools for Peace days at Metro. We will continue the Tools for Peace afterschool club every Wednesday starting Sept. 13, 2012 at Metropolitan Arts & Tech High School.

If you are a school looking to learn more about how to bring Tools for Peace to your campus, please contact us at info@toolsforpeace.org.

Introduction to Stop, Breathe & Think - Adult Trainings

The Tools for Peace team led two introductory adult trainings this past summer. The trainings occurred in May in the San Francisco Bay area and again in June in Tehachapi, CA. The trainings were in-depth and hands-on for working professionals, teachers, parents, and community leaders. Working closely with our training staff, participants were introduced to our Stop, Breathe & Think curriculum. They experienced the workbook first-hand by combining training in mindfulness and meditation with artistic expression, writing, and discussion. A portion of the workshop was designated for participants to practice workbook content facilitation with the group.

Thank you to those who participated in one of our summer adult trainings! A list of upcoming adult trainings will be listed on our website shortly.
