Dear St. Andrew's Families,

Three teachers in three completely different disciplines received national recognition for their work this week. Dr. Harvey Johnson’s discovery of new formulations of therapeutic antibodies was published in Molecular Pharmaceutics. Joshua Meier’s latest exhibition was featured in the photography magazine Don’t Take Pictures. Five different reviews published Latin and Greek poetry translations from Chris Childers, including one in the United Kingdom. Chris also was named a finalist for the Ruth Lilly Fellowship for poetry.

Full Faculty 2

I've never had such inspiring colleagues.

In the past seven days we’ve been blessed to hear wisdom from John McGiff (who gave me a master class on his Convocation talk so I could write this), Tad Roach, who continues to ask us to not only notice, but prepare our hearts and minds for the complexities of the 21st Century (listen), and Will Speers who once again made us all appreciate our time here together (listen).

I cherish every opportunity to hear ideas and insights from Emily Pressman, thoughts on leadership from Seraphine Hamilton, and the measured advice from my original advisor, Lindsay Brown. I could go across the rows in the picture above and explain the many gifts of each faculty member.

The vast majority of space in these emails every week will highlight students, but given this week’s news, I needed to step back and thank my colleagues for all they do for students, each other, and me as well.

Sincerely,
Will Robinson '97

Delaware Mud Run

We announced last week that we'll be participating in the Delaware Mud Run again this year on September 22. The students are putting together teams of four. Here's what parents need to know:

Please sign the waiver (found here) and send to Joleen Hyde via fax to (302) 378-7120 or scan and send to jhyde@standrews-de.org.
The cost is $30 for SAS students, but there is financial aid available. Please contact Chaplain Jay Hutchinson, if needed.
You don't need to register your child — they are registering here on campus.
Families are welcome to join us. You can register on the Mud Run's main website. St. Andrew's starts at 12:20, but come early and stay late. It's a full day of fun.

The Mud Run is the main fundraiser for the Leukemia Research Foundation of Delaware. The foundation's president and founder, Denni Ferrara, joined us at School Meeting yesterday to share her story (watch here). Every penny the foundation raises goes directly to leukemia research at places like St. Jude's Children's Hospital and the Nemours Leukemia Research Program.

Questions? Contact Chaplain Jay Hutchinson or Joleen Hyde

In the Classroom

John Burk's physics students spent time this week measuring the energy content of a AA battery versus a peanut. John's class would be interested in hearing which you think contains more energy. Please take this one-question survey. We'll share the results and a short video from the students explaining the answer here next week.

2013-14 Visiting Artist Series

Our first artist in the 2013-14 Visiting Artist Series is a young painter from Columbia, South Carolina named Dylan Critchfield-Sales. He spent part of the morning in John McGiff’s drawing and painting classes working with students. The opening reception for "The Nature of Seeing: Landscape, Figure, and Interior" is tonight in the Warner Gallery at 6:45 p.m. Dylan is the first of four visiting artists who will exhibit and discuss their work with students this year.

Student Life

Students are buckling down in classes and activities, but they're also having a lot of fun. Here are two videos from the week to provide a window into what happens outside of classes, afternoon activities and study hall.
