Paradigms, Fidelity, and Attachment Trauma
As an undergraduate psychology student in the 1970s, my world view was significantly influenced by Thomas Kuhn's 1962 The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Kuhn proposed an "episodic model" of scientific advances in which periods of conceptual elaboration were punctuated by crises involving fundamental "paradigm shifts" in scientific models. Before reading Kuhn, I had naively believed that science progressed smoothly and that the scientific community readily accepted new theories that better fit new data.
The role of eye movements in processing emotional memories
This month I was prompted to reflect again on Kuhn' ideas when I came across the first published attack by Devilly, Ono, and Lohr (2013) on Christopher Lee and Pim Cuijpers's (2013) brilliantly written "A meta-analysis of the contribution of eye movements in processing emotional memories". You will find the Devilly, Ono, and Lohr (2013) commentary along with Lee and Cuijpers' response abstracted in the November EMDR Research news along with a link to the open access first page of each commentary.
Access to published fidelity scales and EMDR scripts
I am pleased to be able to report that Springer Publishing Company is making available PDFs of Appendices A and B to purchasers of my 2009 A Guide to the Standard EMDR Protocols for Clinicians, Supervisors, and Consultants. Current purchasers of the book receive a download link printed on the inside of the first page of the book. Earlier editions and ebook versions omitted this download page link. As the author, I believe that all purchasers should have access to printable versions of these useful resource pages which have been made available to current purchasers of the softcover edition.
Details on how all purchasers of my book can obtain the download link are now available on one of the book pages at www.AndrewLeeds.net.
The Appendix A provides fidelity scales for all eight phases of EMDR therapy with adults. Appendix B provides treatment planning and recording forms and verbatim scripts for both RDI and the standard EMDR procedural steps.
November EMDR Research News
This month, in addition to the two commentaries on Lee and Cuijpers (2013) the are five new research articles. The video of the month is the introduction to a recording of Debra Wesselmann’s 2010 workshop at the EMDR Europe Conference in Hamburg on “Adapting EMDR for Children with Reactive Attachment Disorder Behaviors.”
Attachment Trauma
In the forthcoming books section of the November EMDR Research news you will find an early announcement of two exciting books from Debra Wesselmann and her co-authors Cathy Schweitzer and Stefanie Armstrong on a team treatment model for offering EMDR therapy to parents and their children with attachment and trauma issues.
October video of the month
Just a reminder in case you missed it, last month, I brought you the full hour-long, invited closing plenary which I delivered June 13, 2010 at the EMDR Europe Conference in Hamburg on “The Future of EMDR.” This presentation began with a 20 year history of key research and criticisms about EMDR before closing with 12 predictions for the future.
