Dear. St. Andrew's Families,

This week was about as jam-packed as any in recent memory, so please understand if your son or daughter appears to hibernate over the next few days. On top of our standard weekly schedule we've had the Winter Musical, V Form leadership workshops, two basketball state tournament games, the wrestling state tournament, two nights of state swimming preliminaries, an orchestra concert, a student art show, the National Latin Exam, the Mock Trial competition and the Winter Athletic Assembly. If that weren't enough, Andy Kwon '15 organized a friendly basketball game of St. Andrew's students vs. students from the Delaware School for the Deaf.

Many faculty members tried to squeeze in one last meeting with advisees before break after completing advisor letters earlier this week and we're charging straight through the beginning of break tomorrow. I had grand plans to write an essay rolling around in my head this week, but I need to run to an indoor soccer game of faculty vs. students. Later, the senior class is going to come together for 30 hard minutes of karaoke in the senior room. I'll try to get some video, but I can't promise they'll let me.

Please enjoy this week's installment and please also hug your son or daughter when you see them tomorrow or after they return from whatever adventure they may be setting out on. It's been an incredibly harsh winter, but we made it through with the energy the students, faculty and staff bring every day. Enjoy the break. We look forward to welcoming students back in a few short weeks.

Best,
Will Robinson '97

St. Andrew's in Haiti

We are so proud of this group who loaded a van at 3:00 a.m. today to begin their journey to La Fond Belle, a small village northwest of Port au Prince, Haiti. The group will spend the next 10 days building a solar array to power the village with clean, renewable energy.

You can follow updates on their blog: http://standrews-haiti-2014.blogspot.com/

More students and faculty will leave this weekend for a service trip to Nicaragua while the Choral Scholars head out for their tour through Virginia and the Carolinas.

Celebrating the Arts

We were fortunate to be treated to a concert from the St. Andrew's Orchestra earlier today. Director Fred Geiersbach titled the concert "From Russia with Love" with three pieces from Tchaikovsky, Bruch, and Shostakovich. Alphonso Ramirez '15 (below) gave a spectacular performance of Bruch's Violin Concerto in g, Op. 26. You can watch the concert on our livestream channel.

Tonight, the Warner Art Gallery hosts an exhibition of student works from painting, drawing, ceramics, mixed-media, and photography classes.

In the Classroom

Elizabeth Roach and Emily Pressman's Humanities students Louise Marks '14 and Jamie O'Leary '14 were actually this excited to turn in their exhibition papers today. Their classmates joined them in properly memorializing the event with a choreographed dance to Kool and the Gang's "Celebration."

John Paris '17 treats his Spanish 2 classmates to a video he made explaining how to properly marinate and cook swordfish. We're not sure how prevalent Old Bay is in Spanish-speaking countries, but Marylanders would appreciate the Easton-native's insistence on including it in his recipe.

Yousaf Khan '16 created an Electric Math Circle using the Arduino as a way to show the art of a unit circle in trigonometry. LEDs light up to show the same sine and cosine values. He's documented the entire process on his blog in case, as he says, "anyone wants to learn how to do it and build on my efforts."

GO SAINTS!

Members of the boys and girls swim teams will have to delay their departure for spring break after qualifying for the state finals during preliminaries this week. Xander Geiersbach '16 broke the School record in the 500-Free (4:47) and several more swam personal records at the University of Delaware's Rawstrom Natatorium.

Saints in Service

We're not yet sure how this came about, but three members of the boys crew team took it upon themselves to give blood this week. The School's annual blood drive falls right in the middle of crew season and the boys wanted to participate without interfering with their training. Thank you Danny Deveau '14, Noah Rickolt '14 and Jordan Rogers '14!

Champions of the World!

Melinda's Boys brought home the SAISL Championship this week with a win over KFC. Their joy will be short-lived, however, as they will now face the faculty and Team Macduff later tonight.
