Interview with Tom Brannon '58

Sterling College: When did you graduate from Sterling College?
1958

SC: What courses of study did you Major(s)/Minor(s) in?
Sociology and History

SC: What activities were you involved in while on campus?
I was a member of the college choir and the college quartet.

SC: What residence hall did you live in?
Well, I lived at Maurice '39 and Margaret (Nichol) '39 Reed’s house which was straight across the street from Cooper Hall for the first three years. The last year I lived in Campbell Hall.

SC: What are you doing now?
I’m retired and live in Washington in a house overlooking the Columbia River.

SC: Do you have children? What are their names? Did they go to Sterling College?
Yes, I have a son, Michael '88, and he went to Sterling College. He played baseball and was the quarterback on the football team. He now lives in Seattle, Washington. I also have a daughter, Shelley, who graduated from San Jose State University. She now lives in Portland, Oregon.

SC: Where do you live?
Kelso, near Longview, Washington.

SC: How did your experience and time at Sterling College shape you?

Well, the time and experiences – I was from Pittsburgh where many high school graduates went to work in the steel mill or coal mine and I went to Sterling and realized maybe there was a better way of life. Then I spent 40 years in airplane production and financial computer systems management.

SC: What did you enjoy or appreciate most about Sterling College?
My friends and classmates and in general the whole environment: the teachers, the community, the small town, the Christian environment – it’s stuck with me all my life.

SC: Do you have any children or relatives who attend or work at the College now? No.

SC: How are you remaining involved on the campus?
Well, I try to get back to Homecoming at least every two to three years. I’ve been there a number of times when my son was there of course. I have been back maybe five times in the last ten years or so.

SC: Do you mind if we include an email address so people can get a hold of you?
