Where are we now, and where are we going?

"Harvest" is an apt description of the moment we find ourselves in. What does one do during harvest? Celebrate the bounty AND save the seeds for next season. We're excited that the groundswell is happening; actions are coming in bursts; and alliances are expanding. Of course, progress is never a straight line and we've seen some setbacks: upstate and nationwide the elections did not all go our way; the Spectra and Transco pipelines have now been turned on. But since when did radical change ever happen on the first try? As we said at last weekend's rally: They may have built one pipeline, but we are BUILDING A MOVEMENT. Onward!

WHERE ARE WE NOW? As of November 1st, shale gas from Pennsylvania, mixed with potentially high levels of radon, is flowing through the Spectra pipeline, as well as the Harlem Transco line.

WHERE ARE WE GOING? Our next line of defense is to get the radon bill, A6863 passed during the next legislative session, which starts in January. If you want to help by speaking to YOUR representative about the bill, please email us at Contact@SaneEnergyProject.org. Also in January, we'll be running the Citizen Radon Test for the third year. Sign up starts in December.

WHERE ARE WE NOW? Seems like all at once a whole lot of ordinary people have decided it's time to act. The spectrum of action ranges from quiet meditation to civil disobedience, or as we prefer it, CPR (Creative Peaceful Resistance). Arrests in protest of shale gas, salt cavern storage, tar sands, and mountaintop removal are increasing in frequency.

Tree sitters in PA attempted to stop clear-cutting for a pipeline right-of-way. A dozen New Yorkers blocked the Seneca Lake LNG site. First Nation people in Canada blockaded frack sites. Even the Sierra Club, with a long-standing rule against civil disobedience, is testing the waters.

WHERE ARE WE GOING? Trainings are happening now for tar sands resistance and other actions. But it's not all about getting arrested. Nearly every action lately has been more creative, more artistic, more BEAUTIFUL than the last. (Check out the reportbacks HERE.) Sane Energy Project is planning a forum comparing differing philosophies about CPR, with experts from divergent backgrounds of resistance. Stay tuned!

WHERE ARE WE NOW?
A grand coalition of grassroots activists had an idea brewing for some time to launch a statewide campaign focused on keeping New York State food frack-free. Artwork donated to the anti-fracking movement by illustrator, Will Sweeney, became the meme.

The campaign quickly took shape in the form of a website, a facebook page, postcards and banners, and launched at the Global Frackdown on October 19th, and the following weekend at the Union Square rally to save the Black Dirt Region. Outreach to farmers markets, food distributors and shops has resulted in tremendously positive feedback, and the alliance is expanding quickly.

WHERE ARE WE GOING? The Food Not Fracking campaign will be rolling out through the Fall and Winter. Join us to spread the word about protecting our foodshed, Do you frequent a greenmarket near where you live? Are you a member of a CSA? Do you shop at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's or Fresh Direct? Please email foodnotfracking@gmail.com to get involved.
