ELVA December Newsletter

Apologies for the recent lack of news but as mentioned on the Elva website, I have been involved with a time consuming house move. However progress has been made and I can now return to some updates via this overdue Newsletter.

The ELVA Forum

Firstly many thanks to those early birds who promptly responded to the very new Gallery option now featuring on the ELVA website, which allows owners to post some pictures and a description of their cars. It is easy to register on the Forum, but help is available if needed, and you can then share your passion with others.

We do have problems with spammers who would overwhelm the Forum given half a chance, but the skills of our website guru Graham are keeping them at bay! There is easy choice of questions to answer and you will be set. Try to use a memorable password, start posting and share your ELVA enthusiasm worldwide!

Bud Brynes suffered a serious accident in his Courier recently but fortunately he came out of the car relatively unscathed despite travelling some distance inverted, having been hit from behind. Seems the roll hoop did a good job.

The photo is of the Courier before the incident showing that all important roll hoop. Get well soon Bud.

Guy Verhofstadt has been very active in his ELVA Mk.III. Guy was Prime Minister of the Belgian Government between 1999 and 2008. While a very familiar name in Europe, few are aware of his passion for classic cars. A recent magazine quote states "Guy Verhofstadt is a man of good taste, as can be judged by the car he will be handling this coming weekend in the Ardennes, namely a 1959 Elva sports racer Mk.III, a British car powered by a modest 1095cc power unit."

Entered in the Stirling Moss Trophy race at Spa, the Mk.III suffered some engine issues but managed to finish the race. Pleased to see Guy Verhofstadt and his Mk.III 100/66 back on track during 2013.

Funny how these things happen but just recently some really local news came to the forefront. Firstly the excellent Championship win by Pete Barnard in Courier 'VGN 111', chassis number 100/2, then some show awards to Brian Stern for his Courier which will soon be featured in an ELVA website article, plus a surprise visit from Terry Wood who is the owner of front-engined Formula Junior with another very early number 100/02. Will be putting together another feature on this car and owner too! All located in Sussex, still the home of ELVA.

From Terry Wood showing his very early ELVA F/J. Note the interesting nose badge 'ETA' used by David, the first owner, being 'Ecurie Toad Automobiles'. I know Alan Patterson in the States has been the only owner of Junior 100/21 with Terry being the long time second owner of this particular car 100/02. Amazing!

David McMullan was the very effective sales manager for ELVA in the Trojan days and made me chuckle when he recently wrote "I would provide a demonstration car to an often jet lagged potential client. Drive them up Purley Way in my very hot Courier, then head into a local housing estate flat out in third flinging that machine all over the place ... I remember most people changed colour! I had just finished two years pro kart racing at Nassau etc., for Peter Agg. When you race karts at the top end, you take no prisoners!!" Top man.

Ironically, when the Courier production finally stopped, David had actually provided Trojan with a very full order book, but Peter Agg had concerns relating to supply issues, particularly with the MGB power units, and of course there was the distraction of the prestigious ELVA association with the Bruce McLaren Racing Team.

Hindsight a wonderful thing, but a shame that the Courier was unceremoniously ditched, as many influential people believe that a modern ELVA two-seater performance road/track car would still find enthusiastic customers. We are working on it!

Still thinking of that special Poster/Print then order soon for an extra happy Christmas?

Ralf enjoying Donington Park in the Mk.III 100/46

Ralf Emmerling in France is a very active, competitive and successful historic racer and sends wonderful pictures of his many outings which include campaigning his ELVA Mk.III together with his other ELVA sports racer, this time a Mk.V. There will be a more from Ralf soon.

It is clear that despite the deflated financial climate of recent times, the ELVA contingent are still out using and enjoying their cars on both road and track, and surely we can therefore look forward to a really special 'Diamond' celebration in 2015. Your feedback will be appreciated.

I hope to circulate another Newsletter before the Christmas break, but if that does not happen then my sincere best wishes for a perfect holiday and even better 2014.
