Read on to win a double pass

Widely recognised as one of the greatest artistic achievements of the 20th century, Einstein on the Beach will return to Australia for an exclusive season at Arts Centre Melbourne as part of a major world tour, bringing to a new generation this ground-breaking work that changed the way theatre was made.
Rarely performed due to its epic scale, Einstein on the Beach, An Opera in Four Acts, launched its director/designer Robert Wilson and composer/lyricist Philip Glass to international success when it was first produced in Avignon in 1976 with subsequent performances in Europe and New York. Now nearly four decades since it was first performed and 21 years since its last production (seen exclusively in Australia at the 1992 Melbourne Festival) a remarkable revival by Wilson, Glass, and choreographer Lucinda Childs has critics and audiences in raptures all over again.

Arts Centre Melbourne from 31 July to 4 August 2013

WINTER WONDERLAND OF FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT

ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE

Dance, Theatre and Music for the whole family from Wednesday 31 July to Sunday 18 August. From a retelling of the Brothers Grimm’s Hansel and Gretel to a lavish dance spectacle inspired by flowers and insects.

Botanica
From blooming flowers to creeping insects, Mother Nature’s four seasons are brought to life on stage by award-winning dance company Momix’s new production Botanica from Wednesday 7 – Sunday 11 August. Inspired by the patterns of nature and the science of plants and flowers, Botanica follows the rhythms of the seasons, the changing shape of life on earth and the passing of a day. Set to an eclectic score ranging from birdsong to Vivaldi, nature's changing imagery is revealed through MOMIX’s talented dancers, who embody everything from falling petals to buzzing dragonflies to fossilised dinosaurs.

.h.g.
Inspired by Hansel and Gretel, Swiss company Trickster-p reimagines the fairy tale in their walk-through, contemporary haunted house .h.g. from Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 August. Armed with a set of earphones, an iPod and a torch, the audience – one by one – will walk into the very heart of the story, guided through a series of rooms and passageways, each a bone-chilling world of its own.

Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer
In a highly imaginative fusion of animation, mime, puppetry, projections and live music, actor Sam Longley tells the tale of Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer in this production by Perth Theatre Company and Weeping Spoon Productions. The seas have risen and many have died and now, in a last-ditch effort to save the human race, Alvin must venture down into the mysterious depths of the deep blue sea to find a new place for everyone to live. In the Fairfax Studio from Wednesday 14 – Saturday 18 August, Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer has won a slew of awards world-wide, including Outstanding Solo Show at the New York International Fringe Festival, and has two productions touring simultaneously around the globe.

Australian Impressionists in France

Untill 6 Oct 2013 at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square

Australian Impressionists in France exhibits over 130 works, focussing on the remarkable story of Australian Impressionist artists who lived and worked in France from 1885 to 1915. It includes important paintings by John Russell, E. Phillips Fox and Charles Conder, as well as never before seen works by lesser-known artists.

The exhibition shows that during these years Australian art took place beyond the confines of Australia, and examines how the expatriate artists were part of the story of Impressionism in Australia.

monet

French ambiance as you walk to his house

Many artists create paintings of beautiful gardens, Monet created a beautiful garden to paint it

MONET’S GARDEN at the National Gallery of Victoria, untill 8 September 2013

It is hard to imagine that before Claude Monet and his friends wandered out into nature to paint it, a practice now called plein-air landscape painting, very few artists did this before them. It was simply not done… it caused a furore. But Claude departed from the salon practice and led the way of a new movement, the Impressionists.
The wonderful Monet’s Garden exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria tries hard to connect you with the place where these paintings were created. The natural rock walls as you wander in are as if walking into his country house. Large back-lit photos greet you of the artist in his garden, as if he is interrupted by your visit.

The paintings are astounding, all 63 of them. Starting with some early works, including two portraits of the artist and his wife by his friend and fellow impressionist Auguste Renoir. Waling from room to room one progress through, giving a sense of his chronological life. Here he visited London and was influenced by Turner and created a mesmerising almost abstract painting of the London bridge in heavy fog. There he visited Norway and painted with refreshing bright colours the little red houses at Bjórnegaard.
Much has been written about Monet’s waterlilies, but only a visit to this exhibition will give you a sense in how many ways Monet painted these water plants and how he played with the reflections surrounding them. Almost all of the paintings are of nature, a nature he created with his own hand from what was originally a swamp into an exquisite cascade of colours, movement and light.
Your incredible journey through Monet’s Garden ends in his garden. The specially commissioned multimedia installation was created in November in his garden at Giverny and immerses you in the daily beauty of Monet’s garden. The only thing is missing is the smell from his pipe.

Anne Frank, A history for today

AFrank

The exhibition has travelled to the Gold Museum in Ballarat and will be on display until 11 August 2013.
It then travels around major cities and regional towns throughout Australia in this and the coming years.

Message
The worldwide tour is coordinated by the Anne Frank House and is directed at young people from 11 to 18 years old. “The diary of Anne Frank is a book with a strong message which is still relevant for all young people throughout the world: ‘learn to live together with other communities and respect each other’s culture and habits.’ And that is what we want to explain in this exhibition,” according to Ronald Leopold, general director of the Anne Frank Foundation. “We want to pass on the message to the younger generation. Therefore supplementary material such as a catalogue, a DVD and instructions for guides and schools will be part of the exhibition.” The Anne Frank Exhibition travelled through New Zealand from 2010 till 2012 and was a huge success. The expectations for Australia are very high too.

Dutch Tall Ships

DutchTallShipsRotterdam

Dutch Tall Ships departing Rotterdam. (photo by Gerda Poot)

On the 27th of October in the year 1628 a proud crew of Dutch VOC ship ‘Batavia’ departed from The Netherlands for their destination; The Dutch East Indies. Unfortunately, they never reached their final destination. The ship wrecked at the west coast of Australia, on the Abrolhos Islands.

Almost 400 years later, a small fleet of Dutch Tall Ships is following the footsteps of this historic voyage. Now equipped with modern tools to avoid the reefs they are going to rediscover the area where this tragedy took place.

Dutch Tall Ships
Three-masted schooner ‘Oosterschelde’ (1918), bark ‘Europa’ (1911) and two mast Ketch ‘Tecla’ (1916) departed from The Netherlands last year for an epic voyage around the world. Following the old trade routes and passing notorious capes, they sail around the world in a small fleet, just like in ancient times. The complete voyage takes around 1,5 years. Guests can join the professional crew on all legs of this circumnavigation.

Arrival in Fremantle
On Saturday July 27, the ships will arrive in Fremantle. The Major of Fremantle, the director of the Western Australian Maritime Museum and other dignitaries, will welcome them. The ships will be berthed in Victoria Quay, at the C and D shed, Fremantle.

Visit the ships
The Dutch Tall Ships will be open for the public on Sunday July 28, from 10 AM until 3 PM (visitors are asked for a small gold coin donation on board of each ship).

Special Batavia Voyage
From Fremantle the three ships make a 12-day expedition from August 3-14 to the Abrolhos Islands. This chain of 122 islands and associated coral reefs is one of the world’s most important seabird breeding places. And is very famous for the grounding of the 'Batavia' and the mutiny of her survivors. You can join the ships on this unique voyage, with a guide sailing along to explain all about the history and tragedy of the Batavia.

Sailing along the Australian coast
If you are interested in joining in on other legs, there is also the possibility to step aboard for one of the other legs along the Australian coast, from Fremantle to Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney or even on to New Zealand.
Information on the sailing vessels and their voyage can be found on www.dutchtallships.com.

International Tall Ship Festival Program:
More than 20 tall ships from around the world will gather in Australia for the International Tall Ship Festival and the Sydney Auckland Tall Ship Regatta – the first event of its kind in Australasia.
The three month Festival Program will see Tall Ships celebrating with Parades of Sail, street parades and festivals in several cities, including the International Fleet Review – celebrating 100 years since the first entry of the Royal Australian Navy’s Fleet into Sydney Harbour.

oom Siebrand

Diana Renkema-Heikens
