Dear St. Andrew's Families,

My grandfather was born in the living room of a house he still owns on October 3, 1918, eleven years before St. Andrew’s began to take shape. We celebrated his 95th birthday yesterday over dinner with my grandmother, his wife of 65 years, their seven children and subsequent offspring. My grandfather still goes to work every day, plays soccer with my four- and six-year old sons and shares a gentle attentiveness with my grandmother that makes you believe in humanity. Still, there are few things I value more than my grandfather's example of how to live life with honor and integrity.

For as long as I've known him, my grandfather has favored hard work over shortcuts, clear truth over shades of gray, and earning what you deserve, no more, no less. He is never far from my mind, but was firmly at the front late last night while I discussed the honor code with the earnest residents of Baum corridor. The boys sat attentively while I explained the consequences of lying, cheating, and stealing, but also the aspirations of the code.

Like many institutions, we think of honor as a way of life we value and strive to maintain. We ask the students to take individual and collective ownership of it. Last night, the boys of Baum ratified a code they made and posted on their common room wall. Neely Egan '16 and Luke Forsthoefel '16 celebrated a classmate this week during School Meeting who held himself accountable and told the truth after a mistake. We try to celebrate these small acts every day as the world continues to dictate a constant need to reinforce a high standard of honor.

I’m not naïve enough to believe my grandfather never fell short of his own high standard. I am sure, however, that his belief in the value of living with honor and integrity helped him live a life worth celebrating. That is my hope for today's students.

Sincerely,
Will Robinson ‘97
Communications, Faculty Advisor to the Honor Committee

Stewardship Weekend

Kent Sweezey '70, Chair of the Board of Trustees, delivered some heartfelt wisdom during our noonday Chapel today before members of the board joined students for sit-down lunch. Kent described his arrival at St. Andrew's as a very scared, under-prepared 12-year old II former and the life lessons he's learned since then. You can listen to Kent's talk on our podcast page.

Blessing of the Animals

Dogs, cats, and other critters converged on the front lawn Wednesday evening for the annual blessing of the animals. It's a highlight for students who bring faculty pets to receive a prayer from chaplains Jay Hutchinson and Dave DeSalvo. There was a magical moment early on when a Red-tailed Hawk swooped in and alighted on the bell tower spire. The hawk stood watch over the entire service.

In the Classroom

Dr. Harvey Johnson's AS Chemistry class studied colligative properties this week. In the paper he designed for the unit, Harvey explains that, "colligative properties are properties of solutions that depend upon the ratio of the number of solute particles to the number of solvent molecules in a solution and not on the type of chemical species present."

The students not only understand what that means, but were able to distill it into a lab that resulted in some delicious ice cream. You can read Harvey's full paper on the AS Chemistry course guide found on the library website.

Silver Linings

The government shutdown led to a community-wide educational opportunity this week as Wilson Everhart '95 volunteered to present the facts of the government shutdown during School Meeting. Wilson helped students get to a place where they could develop their own questions and then followed up by helping them find places where they can start exploring possible answers.

Headmaster's Forum on Syria and Egypt

Ana Ramirez led a Headmaster's forum discussing the current state of affairs in Syria and Egypt on Friday evening. Students in Terence Gilheany's and Lindsay Brown's Middle East history classes offered perspectives based on research they've conducted over the past several weeks. Many stated that they left with more questions than they came with.

Eric Finch and Class of 2011 Hall of Famers

Mathletes Wanted!

The most dominant program at the School isn't tennis, lacrosse, crew, or (fill in your favorite sport). It's the Math Team led by Eric Finch. St. Andrew's mathletes have finished first or second in the state every year since the team has been in existence (college visits during championships doomed a few teams). The team is looking for new members for the 9th grade team and 10-12 grade teams. Please encourage your child to join the winning tradition!

Friday Night Swimming Lessons

If you are interested in seeing St. Andrew's at its best try stopping by the pool on a Friday night. You'll find about 40 kids split into two groups: those learning how to swim and those teaching them. Mary Kelly (below right in red keeping watch) is passionate about helping kids learn to swim as a life skill and recruited more than a dozen volunteers to join her in teaching their classmates basic lessons on how to float through freestyle strokes. The goal is to have every student pass the swim test and Mrs. Stacey Duprey '85 has even offered a home-cooked soul food dinner to any student and their teacher who makes it.
