Teaching Impact Investing in High Performance Social Enterprises

The idea of “impact investing” is gaining a great deal of attention these days, including in undergraduate education. While many institutions have offered classes in strategic philanthropy in recent years, and of course in traditional business investing for many, we have focused our efforts at SEI on developing educational programs for a new third way of investing. This new investment discipline involves socially minded investors providing capital to both for profit and non-profit enterprises that are committed to efficiently addressing social problems in both a sustainable and innovative way.

Break the Bubble, Young Entrepreneurs Panel

Mayor Thomas M. Menino has created a new initiative that engages college students in entrepreneurial ideas and with the city of Boston. This initiative has been possible with the assistance of ONEin3, an initiative that offers resources to young adults in order to create and innovate, and with the help of MassChallenge, a program that catalyze startups in the Massachusetts area. The first panel was the past November 13 in the Boston Innovation District. Young students were able to ask their questions to five serial Boston entrepreneurs. Featuring Akshaya Patra, in memoriam of Naman Shah

On November 26, 2012, the Social Enterprise Institute hosted Madu Sridhat, president and CEO of Akshaya Patra for its November Lecture Series event.

Akshaya Patra, works in 9,000 schools across eight states of India to provide nutritious meals to 1.3 million underprivileged school children. Read the recap of the event to learn more about the organization and how to donate to the Naman Shah Memorial Fund.

Fellowship Opportunity in Africa

LDI Africa is seeking young business leaders, preferably graduate students and mid-level business professionals, for its Emerging Institutions Fellowship Program (EIFP) in Nigeria and South Africa.

The EIFP provides hands-on service opportunities in Africa's leading financial institutions, private equity and venture capital firms. Through this program, Fellows will participate in a 3-12 month fellowship where they will work with African venture capital companies to position their portfolio businesses for long-term sustainability. Panua-Partners in Hope seeks to bring orphans and vulnerable children out of extreme poverty to a place of hope for their future and an ability to sustain themselves and their siblings.

The program is looking for a motivated person who can drive this ministry to complete the final stage of a three year program and to further develop the plans and objectives for the next three years phase of the program. New Honors Program Seminar

Social Impact Investing: Connecting Compassion and Capital

Course Description: Impact investing is a rapidly emerging sector within the global capital markets and investment community in which investors increasingly fund social enterprises dedicated to solving the world’s most difficult problems, like extreme poverty. Today, many are seeking and receiving much needed capital to fund critical operations in the form of equity investments, loans and other forms or so-called “patient capital”. In this class, students will learn about this emerging sector, as well as study the people and enterprises that receive impact or patient capital and how they use it to build sustainable high impact social enterprises around the world, and especially in low income or developing countries.
