The fiercest typhoon ever recorded laid waste to The Philippines' east, overwhelming emergency services and leaving bodies rotting in the streets of shattered cities and towns. Tacloban, the provincial capital of Leyte, was smashed by 315km/h winds and ocean surges that destroyed homes, cars and hurled ships hundreds of metres inland.

Municipal water systems have also been destroyed. Because of the lack of electricity, personal water pumps and household purifiers are not operational. Flood waters have contaminated wells and pump sources. It will be several weeks, if not months before this part of the country is self-sufficient in terms of clean water production.
