Welcome to the July 2012 issue of Gail's Gazette!

Although I have the best intentions, things sometimes get away from me -- like sending out a regular newsletter. Blame it on travel, for teaching and for birding. It's been fun, but hectic and lots of things slipped through the cracks. My new goal is to keep in touch with you more regularly, at least 6 times each year!

One of the highlights of my spring was teaching at the AQS show in Paducah, Kentucky, where I got to see my newest large quilt, Abo Canyon Memories, hanging in the show. It was designed by yours truly, originally for the 2012 Hawks Aloft raffle quilt. I loved the design so much that I expanded on it and Donna, Michele and I stitched and quilted it. It was entered in the group quilt category. It was quite a thrill to see it hanging in such a prestigious show.

Besides Paducah, I taught on a Caribbean cruise for Stitchin' Heaven, at the Empty Spools Seminars at Asilomar in California, in Lincoln, Nebraska, Las Vegas, Nevada, Chicago, Illinois, San Diego, California, Des Moines, Iowa, Bloomington, Indiana, and for the North Carolina Quilt Symposium and the Great Smoky Mountains Quilt Guild in North Carolina. Whew! A busy, but fun and productive year so far!

I really enjoyed meeting you in class!

Vote for Hawks Aloft on July 28 !

As most of you know, in my non-quilting life, I am executive director of Hawks Aloft, Inc., the non-profit that I, along with others, founded 19 years ago in Albuquerque. Our mission is to conserve indigenous wild birds through research, education, and cooperation with others.

We are very excited to be a finalist in the Toyota 100 Cars for Good program. Each day, for 100 days this summer, 5 worthy organizations compete. The organization with the most votes on that day wins a brand, spankin’ new Toyota vehicle.

Please help Hawks Aloft win a Toyota Sienna that we will use as an avian ambulance and for our education and research programs. We have a 22 year old Swainson's Hawk, who just lives for babies! She is the best foster mama in the world and has raised many orphaned hawks over the years. To learn more about our avian rescues, Hawks Aloft, and why we need a car, check out our video on You Tube

Our voting day is July 28!!

If you are a Facebook user, all you need to do is to download the Toyota 100 Cars for Good App and then remember to vote for us on July 28. You can even sign up to have a reminder sent to you! Tell all your friends to vote too. Thanks so much for your help!!!!! I’ll let you know how it all turned out in the next issue!!!

To find out more about us, please visit our website or the Hawks Aloft Facebook page.

Student Corner

This beautiful quilt was created by Brenda Roach . It was great to see her again in Bloomington Indiana, at the Indiana Heritage Quilt Show in March 2012. Brenda is a very talented quilter. I love her innovative use of fillers and geese. Here’s what she has to say about her quilt:

“This is my newest quilt: The Other Side of the Rainbow. The idea of it is that the neutral colors ‘above’ the rainbow pass through it and explode into the color below.

Thank you for all of the encouragement and techniques that you have shared with me. I believe that my quilt ‘Time to Fly’ will be featured in a one page article in the July issue of American Quilter magazine and you are mentioned in that article.”

Below on the left is a photo of "The Other Side of the Rainbow". On the right is a photo of "Time To Fly". I feature this incredible quilt in all my lectures. It always generates a gasp from the audience.

Upcoming Events - Lectures, Classes, and more!

Many of you, who have taken my one day classes in the past, have expressed a desire for a longer class, so that there would be more time for both design work and sewing. To accommodate this preference, I am offering more multi-day classes next year. I'm going to be teaching some of my very favorite classes and techniques in some beautiful locations and I would LOVE to have you join me in class!

Little House of Geese

It’s little, cute, and a great introduction to the type of quilts that I make. It is designed to be an introductory pattern for an 18” finished quilt that features freezer paper foundation piecing and curved seam assembly, and it can be completed in one day!!! No UFO to stuff in a box and linger in a dark corner for months, or longer.

The September issue of American Quilter Magazine will feature Little House of Geese as a free pattern! Just pick up a copy at your newsstand if you are not a subscriber. Also in this issue will be a feature issue on yours truly, probably sharing with you more than you’d ever want to know, not just about quilts but also about the other parts of my life, those things that make me tick and provide the inspiration for my quilts.

My version of Little House of Geese was made using the Starr Designs Charm Pack of hand-dyes, and combined with commercially printed fabric. We are offering a fabric kit that includes everything except the pattern and hand-made buttons, created by Liz Roberts, of Corrales, NM. The kit, pattern, and buttons can be ordered from my website.

I'd love to be your Facebook Friend! Visit my professional page. Or friend me the next time you visit Facebook.

See you in September!
Cheers!
