Message From Susy

Welcome to Edition 13 of Fair News. I Just recently attended the Fairly Educated Conference, this year it was run by RMIT and a group of very dedicated students with a passion for fair trade and social justice.

I was very inspired by what I saw and experienced. An amazing energy of hope, a whole new generation ready to change this world for something better that what has been given to them. I really do feel confident that together, at this point in time, we as individuals have the power to shape a positive future.

Fairly Educated is aiming to get all the Universities in Australia to become Fair Trade Universities, to help them get there, I urge you to take two seconds of your time to sing this petition and pass on to your friends: EveryUni

Julia-Louise Premoselli the Stylist

I met Julia-Louise over a coffee on Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. She is one of those people that you can see her brain ticking. The moment we started talking about the Fair Fashion Show, I could see her eyes light up and it was as if she had already worked out what to do. Julia-Louise Premoselli is an emerging freelance fashion stylist specializing in photographic shoot productions and fashion parades. She is renowned for her classic –lux approach; her work has been featured in both the local and international markets.
With a love for both fashion and the environment from an early age Julia-Louise is very excited to be part of the Moral Fairground team and put an amazing show together.

Q. What do you think of the ethical fashion scene in Australia?
A.The Australian ethical fashion scene is growing at a steady rate and it is great to see new innovative designers jumping in the waters as well as the more established. You just have to look the US, UK and Europe to see that there is a huge market for ethical fashion and consumers are willing to spend when they are confident that a brand is acting in everyone’s best interest. It won’t be long until the Australian scene expands and spills over to mainstream.
Q. Can fashion ever be totally ethical and sustainable? What needs to happen?
A.In a perfect world, yes. Unfortunately we don’t live in a perfect world and everything we produce will always have an impact on our environment. What we can do is try to reduce this impact as much as possible. All we have to do is look abroad to see that there is a place for real change and to see that it can become a reality.

Q. How do you think we can change people habits with the way they buy their fashion?
A. Awareness and accessibility are the two main factors to make changes in the way people buy fashion. Australia’s ethical and fair trade designers are producing more accessible fashion products by focusing equally on ethics, style and quality. Paired with events such as Fair@Square in promoting these designers I think we are on the right track at tackling these two issues.
Q. Do you think fair trade and ethical fashion empowers not only for producers but also for consumers? Why is this?
A. Certainly, as a consumer knowing that what you choose to purchase can impact on others and the environment in a positive way is most certainly empowering.
Q. What can we expect to see at Fair Fashion this year? Any up and coming labels? Any well know names?
A. This year I really want to showcase a variety of designers from the well-known to the emerging. I believe this will help consumers understand that fair fashion isn’t something attainable solely for the small local designer. Some of the designers featured in the parade this year include The Social Studio, Bento and Ghost & Lola.
We will also be showcasing student designers and their take on ethical fashion.
Q. What do you hope to achieve from Fair Fashion?
A. Ethical fashion isn’t just organic tees and hemp pants anymore. I think awareness and changing people’s perception of what ‘eco’ fashion really is, is my main goal.
Sustainable ethical fashion is a reality and doesn’t mean we have to compromise on ‘fashion’ or ‘style’. I want to showcase the designers who understand and are accomplishing this.
