Whether you are currently a student or if high school is a fading memory, G.B.F. is a light-hearted comedic romp with an affirming message of staying true to yourself and living life honesty. Full of laugh-out-loud moments, the film is the perfect way to kick off a weekend full of fantastic film. Megan Mullally steals the show in a hilarious supporting role as a hip mom who loves her son unconditionally.
Like the stately spa of the title, there is a lot more going on than just instant gratification in this engrossing documentary from Toronto director Malcolm Ingram (Small Town Gay Bar, Bear Nation). The Continental Baths became synonymous with the sexual liberation in post-Stonewall New York City but Continental is more that just a document of a period in gay history, it is an intimate portrait of Steve Ostrow, owner of the Baths, who was an entrepreneur, an artist, an activist and, later in life, an advocate for queer seniors.
A great short film can have as much of an impact as a feature and leave you wanting more. The challenge for us as programmers was selecting just a handful to represent the best of the past year. A concise collection of some of the most diverse, creative shorts from around the globe, these shorts will leave you laughing, bring a tear to your eye, and make you think – often within the same film.
My Festival pick is the Canadian documentary gem Lesbiana - A Parallel Revolution. This week I watched Lesbiana for the second time and I'm so glad I did. There is so much rich lesbian and feminist history packed into this concise hour-long doc. Director Myriam Fougeres takes us to Quebec and the United States and introduces us to many of the leading figures of the 1970s lesbian-feminist movement and she uses archival footage to put us right there in the streets and on the communes with these women.
Lesbiana is preceded by the completely joyous short doc THE DEVOTION PROJECT: FOREMOST IN MY MIND.
I am thrilled that we’re kicking off the 2013 Ottawa LGBT Film Festival with my favourite film from our Toronto Festival, Reaching for the Moon. The costumes, set design and locale for this movie is incredible. Ottawa is in for a treat!
The film I am most looking forward to seeing is none other than Blue is the Warmest Color. How can I resist with such a sexy cast? I assure you, this is going to be a very entertaining Festival, from start to finish.
