Don't just sit there

An Australian study has discovered that an hour of TV watching can snip 22 minutes from a person's life. TV watching has long been used as a surrogate for inactivity. Mounting data from multiple sources says sitting in one place for more than 20 minutes causes fat accumulation around the liver and the heart as well as muscle loss. 30 - 40 minutes of daily exercise does not seem to ameliorate the impact of prolonged inactivity. Weight Loss is More than Counting Calories

Researchers at Boston University found that 2327 teenage girls who ate mostly whole foods ate 250 calories more every day than the girls who ate a more processed diet of cookies, candies and cake but weighed less at the end of a 10 year follow up. While the actual number of calories you put into your body is important, it seems to matter whether the calories comes from an apple or an apple pie. The data indicates that you would be thinner if you ate 10 apples (600 Calories) than if you ate a small slice of apple pie (450 Calories) every day even though you are eating fewer calories with the apple pie. The body handles calories from processed vs. unprocessed food differently. Click here to read more.
